Help HTC Desire S - Soft keys backlight always on?

Is it possible to turn on the soft keys backlight on request?

By default they are off even in poor light conditions and this can be annoying...

He means the back,search,home and menu softkeys. I would also like to know this, mine are sporadic a little.

Htc support told me it is not possible. They are automatic, triggered by the ambient light sensor and from my point of view this is very annoying.

I hope someone will come out with a solution, since it seems I am not the only one with this problem...either by rooting the phone or installing an app...

Mine seems to be turning on and off randomly rather than by detecting a change in light.

Would be nice if we can control it but as Mirko said I don't think there is a way atm.

yep, mine's the same, practically needs almost total darkness for the keys to be illuminated. Even more annoying is that my nephew's Wildfire's has the keys always lit and much brighter too! GRRRRR!!!!
