Issue:HTC Desire stuck in bootloop

Firstly, greetings to all. This is my first post and first time I have ever tried rooting / customising a phone so please go easy on me.

I have a HTC Desire (UK / Vodafone) running 2.2 and decided to root and customise its rom after getting frustrated at the lack of free space in internal memory.

I managed to root the phone successfully using unrevoked 3.32
I then used Alpharev's 1.8 HBoot reflash utility successfully to give me S-OFF

I then followed the rest of the instructions on AlphaRev's site after having chosen the AlphaRev CM7R2 rom

As per the instructions, I did a backup, flashed the rom, wiped everything and did a restore. The restore failed with:

Error in cache:recovery/log (no space left on device)
I wiped the cache but now, on booting the phone I get the Joker splashscreen followed by the recovery menu for 2.5.1.8

No matter what I do, the phone will always boot into this Clockwork recovery menu.

What do I need to do to get the phone back to a usable mode again and break out of the bootloop? I don't mind reverting back to unrooted and factory stock if it means I get have a working phone again.

Sorry for being a noobie but, whilst I am confident with computers, customising phones is new to me so I may need a little handholding. Apologies if there is already a guide out there but with so much to read perhaps I have missed it.

Any guidance is appreciated as I am currently without a phone so am desparate to resolve this issue.

Thanks,

Chris

OK, your problem is simple enough: you tried to change to the CM7 (r2) hboot while still using your stock ROM (at least you said nothing about changing ROMs, so that's what I infer). To fix it, flash AlphaRev's "bravo stock" table and then restore your backup.

The alpharev hboots aren't ROMs (sets of system software). They are modified bootloaders which change the way your phone's internal memory is partitioned. There are 3 partitions in the Desire's memory:

/system - where the ROM lives
/cache - temporary file storage
/data - where user apps and data live

You can use one of the alpharev hboots to increase the size of /data ("more internal memory") but only by shrinking the other partitions. However, that only works if your ROM will fit in the smaller /system partition. And the ROM the phone comes with will not - hence your phone only has part of its system software restored, and won't boot.

Flashing the stock table will restore your original memory partitions, allowing you to restore from your backup.

Once that's done, come over to the root forum, read the FAQs and guides in the sticky thread (especially the memory and storage guide), and ask any questions you have. What you are trying to do is quite possible, but you need to be using a compatible ROM. There are also other ways of addressing the storage problem, which can be used instead of or together with the memory repartitioning.

Hi Hadron,

Thanks for the quick and informative response. Yes. You are right. I tried to change to the CM7 (r2) hboot while still using the stock ROM. I wasn't aware that I needed to download a rom as well but now I know. I was following the alpharev.nl guide but I guess it was written for people who knew what they were doing rather than newbies.

I have downloaded Cyanogen Mod 7.0.3 and that seems to have done the job.

Thanks again - issue resolved.

Chris
