HTC Desire WiFi problems

Hi All

Hope someone can help here.

I gave my wife my HTC Desire when I got myself the Incredible S. She is on a pay as you go contract so doesn't use the phone to full functions, but I would like to be able to update the phone from time to time.

I have tried to switch on WiFi but it won't switch on. I have put my own sim card in and tried to log in to my gmail account - I know the password is correct - but it still won't log in or connect!

The phone asks me to ensure WiFi or Mobile Network is on, and it is, so why doesn't this work?

The phone is running Android 2.2, Baseband version is 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2, Build Number is 2.29.405.2 CL263770 Release Keys, Software is 2.29.405.2 and browser is Webkit 3.1

I have even put in my own sim card as that is on contract and I still can't get WiFi access and update the phone!

Please help!!!!!

Lots of views and no comments - I know its Christmas Eve now, so hopefully someone with an answer will post up in the next week or so so I can get my wifes HTC Desire sorted out.

Are you trying to connect to your home wifi network or a mobile data network? If using your home network, have you verified that the Desire is actually successfully connected to the wireless network? It sounds like an obvious thing to say, but simply having the wifi turned on on the handset itself is not the same as being connected to your network.

You say you can't get access but you're not making your issue very clear. Since wifi has practically nothing to do with the sim you're using (if you're using own wifi network that is) then I don't see what difference a sim would make anyway.

Also, just so you know, there's isn't much in the way of updates available for handset. Mine is now running 2.2.2 but is functionally identical to me, so if your wife doesn't use it for data, then it's less likely she'll know anything is different, because there will be practically no difference so I wouldn't start pulling your hair out over it all just yet.

Trying to connect to my home WiFi, but I can't even get the phone to attempt to connect - it simply says ERROR when I tap on Turn on Wifi. Why does it do this???

I didn't think the sim card was relevant, but I thought I would try it to see if mine made any difference clearly it doesn't.

How do I check for up dates on the phone without WiFi. Wife doesn't have any data plan, which is why I don't want to use 3g etc (which is really naff here where I live so I use WiFi for my Incredible S).

I'm no expert here and not anywhere near the level of expertise of many of the people here, but if you're getting an error message when simply trying to turn wifi on, then that suggests to me that there is a more serious underlying problem with something.

Just to check, are you turning wifi on using a widget on one of the homescreens or by pressing Menu button > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wifi? Again, sounds stupid, but Widgets sometimes break or get mixed up and don't switch on or off the specific function that they're meant to control.

Depending on how important the data that's already on the phone is, you could try a factory reset to basically start from scratch and reset things to make sure it's not a piece of Android that's become corrupt or gone awry somewhere. Obviously, that is something that I'd do only as a last resort though.

In answer to your other question I don't think there is another official way to get an OTA update without some form of data connection, not one that doesn't involve rooting or doing something else to the phone but as I say, I'm all but certain that you wouldn't notice any difference even if you get the available update.

To get an official update you would be looking at a RUU, that would be your only other option I believe

When I get home wifi problems with my Desire I find that just rebooting the router solves the problem!!

Hi mate, not done anything more on this so far. Will try and do something at a later date, but wife not too fussed, so will leave things be for the moment.
