Help HTC Desire with no data plan. Options?

DEE-Z

Newbie
I have a HTC Desire with a 4g mini card

I have been using it in WIFI to alert me of emails & I use it like a PDA by using the scheduler & being able to read & update my Microsoft Excel files.

So far Ive added extra ringtones & music & pics off my computer onto it with no problem.
Ive also changed my wigets in the windows to my liking (music player, calculator, tip calculator, short cuts apps, scheduler & bookmarks)

I will not pay a extra $30 for a data plan but was told I would have to have it to use the phone for calls. I will not be activating it.

What other options do I have by not having it set up with a carrier?
I would like to get more apps & games etc & am not sure how to go about doing it.

?????

i dont think you have many options, i know that the american networks insist on you having a data package when your using a smartphone, it may help to state which network youll be using it on. if you dont enfd up getting a data package you will have to make sure mobile data is turned off while out and about and all the syncs are turned to manual otherwise the phone will send data, which you will be charged a hefty sum for if its not within a data package. although tbh you wont get the best from the phone without one.

Thanks for responding.
I'm using us celluler for the phones I'm currently using now. I will not be adding the HTC Desire to my plan due to the $360 extra a year for the data plan. So there will be no extra charges.

I use simple mobile with my smartphone. I currently have a regular unlimited voice plan ($40) without data. Adding unlimited data would cost me $60 a month. We have to pay the month ahead of time, but its a flat rate. You can't incur additional charges. All i needed to do was buy a sim card. The coverage is also really good.

Any help please.
I was wanting to debrand & update my phone that only has 2.1-update1 & so far have tried this:
1)Dont have a update button on my phone like Ive seen online.
2)Tried the code *#*#CHECKIN#*#* a few times with nothing happening.
3)USB debugging is on.
4)Unknown sources box is checked
5)Downloaded HTC-SYNC to my computer from here---Install Instructions
6)Downloaded the "HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade" from here---HTCdev - HTC Kernel Source Code and Binaries
7)I only seen where it added a flashlight & I saw some info on the Teeter but I dont play it to know any difference.
The phone still shows 2.1-update1.
8)Ive rebooted it a few times already.

All my apps are saved over on Android Market so I can reload them.

Ive thought about rooting but may at a later time do to not really knowing how to but would like to remove a lot of non-removable apps off this thing.

What did you do with the 2.3 upgrade?

That upgrade zip contains an RUU, which is the actual upgrade. It is a Windows executable, so to use it you connect the phone by usb then run the RUU on your pc. There should be a pdf in the zip with detailed instructions. Note that it will wipe the phone, so make sure your data are backed up.

For rooting, visit the all things root subforum and read the faqs and guides, linked from the sticky post.

Don't rush into anything before you are sure you understand what you are doing. If in doubt ask first - we prefer avoiding problems to fixing them :)

Well I read your post & went back & re-downloaded the "HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade" from here---HTCdev - HTC Kernel Source Code and Binaries again in which looks to have more items this time IDK.

Ive got it "Updating the ROM image on the Android phone" that showed it would take 10minutes & its like it stuck on 18% because its been better than 45minutes now LoL. The "Checking Header" little running dots shows its running but I cant tell LoL.

I tryed it again & it stopped at 18% LoL.
