Help HTC Desire Z Black Screen

regall

Lurker
Howdy Esteemed Friends,
I recently bought an faulty Desire Z from Ebay thinking "I can fix it". Turns out I'm a new kid and still a kid on the android block.

The problem on the Desire Z is the screen doesn't display anything. There's a faint light on the screen. Don't think it responds to my screen swipes as can't accept calls using the down swipe on the screen.

The Desire Z starts up fine. The button and keyboard light up during startup. Can also hear the android startup sound at boot. I can receive the calls as well.

Using the RUU, the image version on the phone shows as 1.72.405.2. Haven't got the Original SD card. To make matter worse, I can't set the phone USB debugging on since the screen doesn't work.

Let me admit I'm a rookie in rooting procedure or using the sdk or goldcard. I've been reading a lot of articles and haven't really achieved anything constructive. I'm hoping someone can guide me through resolving this issue.

Thanks
Reg

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if the screen remains blank it sounds as if the LCD panel itself has failed. One last chance.... hold VOLUME_DOWN while powering on. Does the screen display anything now? If not then I'm afraid there's nothing you can do - it's a hardware replacement job. :(

Wasn't hoping for that reply slug but did expect it.
I've read few posts about bad connections in Desire models.
I'll keep the hardware fix as a last option and still look for a software solution.

For those unfortunate souls like me, here's the teardown of desire Z.

Remember, keep this a last option. Not for the faint-hearted.

Slug, don't mind but still looking for more opinions. Appreciate your feedback though.

Although the screen doesn't display anything on my faulty Desire Z, I could confirm the swipes and buttons work. Managed to set the USB debugging on using blind clicks on the screen. the screenshot in the link helped me click in the dark. Took me some time, but got it.

With the above, got the HTC sync working and most importantly, Got the Android Screencast (androidscreencast - Project Hosting on Google Code) working.
As a result, I could manage to see the screen on my Laptop, although the device screen still remained dark. ADB devices also listed the phone successfully.

Now, I'm still not sure if it's a hardware fault, as Slug suggested earlier, or a software one. Help!!!.....Please!!!!

Hello there,

I am facing the same problem with my HTC T-Mobile G2, got it from eBay without warranty so am really hoping for a solution other than replacing the screen.

Help!!!

Regards,
MAK

MAK,
Hope I'm not too late in responding. I've resolved the issue by replacing the screen.

In few cases I've read it's a loose cable. I'd suggest you try reassemble the phone and ensure all cables and connectors are as they should be.

Advice.
1. In the tear down, go slow and easy. If you're unsure at any stage, pause and refer to the manuals or help. The tear down doesn't require any yanking or use of force.
2. Get a proper precision screwdriver set..one with a better grip and of material that doesn't eat away the screws head.

Good luck my friend. Do post your experience.
