Help HTC droid Incredible newbie question

tazoman

Newbie
Hello everyone and i'm a real newbie to the whole android thing. Tomorrow my HTC Incedible will get here provided by Verizon and I want to use it to connect my laptop to the internet, the thing is I don't know what I will need to do in order to accomplish this. Will it connect wirelessly to my laptop or will I need to order some kind of cable to connect from the phone (will it be included with the phone?) to my laptop and will I need to download some kind of software to make this work. I am sorry I am completely new to this any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Mel:)

It will come with a USB cable that charges the phone and connects to computer as a USB drive. You can download HTC sync using a Windows computer and can back up files that way. There is no software for Mac.

You have a couple options here. Verizon has an extra package that you can add to your plan for something like $20/mo. This gives you 5gb of data usage and you can just enable the "Wifi Hotspot" feature that comes preloaded on your phone.

There are apps in the market that will allow you to tether your laptop via bluetooth. This allows you to share the internet that you would be using on your phone anyway, it just routes it through your computer. Additionally, you can do two "hacks" to enable free wireless tethering. These methods work basically the same as the Wifi Hotspot feature that Verizon will give you, but it's free. Note, this is not technically legal and no one here takes any responsibility for the method you chose.

You mentioned that you are new to the Android platform. Are you familiar with Root Privileges at all? To enable all super user access to your phone you can do what is called "Rooting" your phone. Take a look around this forum, ask questions, do some googling and you'll be right up to par!

Or, perhaps the safest route, download PDAnet or Easytether (both do the same) from the market. Install it. There is a client app that you need to download for your PC. Install it. Connect that way without rooting or hacking anything. This uses your data connection and sends it to your PC through the USB cable.

Ok thanks for your responses. When the phone gets here I'll do some messing around with it. Take care all of you!!

$30- not worth it. Go for pdanet. They also have a paid version that allows access to secure sites for example payment methods, gambling sites, things like that.

I think the majority of the tech savvy smart phone users can say it isn't worth it. But it IS worth pointing out the fact that it's also the only 100% legal route. Granted, the feds aren't going to come knocking on your door, but it is similar to the mindset behind downloading music. Just making sure both sides are shown (yes, my Incredible is rooted and I use wifi tethering)

Agree with you completely. Just throwing out options for the guy. I don't use it because I don't have any need. Nice alternative though. Or you can take the even more questionable route with the ##778. Although it's very tempting I don't think I'll be trying that one either.
