Mobile Hotspot - Share the Internet with multiple Wi-Fi devices $29.99

Source: Sprint's site

I guess it would make sense that they'd want to charge the same as their hotspot only device, but no way in the world i'm gonna up my data by $10 and then pay another $30 to be able to share it with my other devices. It's really annoying how all these new features represent a potential new revenue stream for these companies. Especially when they're compartmentalizing the same data stream.

I don't suppose Sprint will come out with some kind of tracking ability that ATT is currently using (believe me, it works because they tried to cancel my data plan because of it :()?

IDK. Sprint has been pretty firm about the UNLIMITED data thing. I don't think they can afford to piss off their users like AT&T and Verizon think they can.

Pdanet and easy tether..........but ur gonna have to use ur usb cord.

Yep, those are the two that I remember. The USB cord is a bummer, but $30 a month for hot spot

Come on sprint. You could have made up in volume what you hope to get in price, if you had made it something on the order of $10. At that price, I would have done it.

I'm almost certain they can only track if your are tethering on 3G.

I dont think they can track it on WiMax as it is basically just a Wifi signal....no difference than if you were on regular Wifi.

Really? Show me numbers that would prove that.

Truth is, I'm sure there are quite a good number of people that pay the $30 (that aren't on tech forums like this one) that are fine paying that fee. Business-wise, Sprint would've changed that price if it weren't a fact.

So I ask all that complain about that fee, if you're on these tech forums and resourceful enough to find and post on these forums, why is it that you don't root your phone and be happy being able to have wireless tethering for free? If it's THAT important to you all and you do have/know the resource to root your phone, why is it not an option for you?

I don't really have a big need for wireless tether, so I'm happy using PDAnet (for free, non-secured website browsing), but just wanted to get an idea of where people are coming from as far as complaints on the $30 fee.

Have you tried Easy Tether? What are the differences between Easy Tether and PDAnet?

I haven't rooted because at the time I considered it, it was quite a bit harder than it is now (and more "dangerous") and because I like the Sense UI. Can you Root and still use the Sense UI (and just delete all that unecissary crap, as well as use other things such as overclocking apps)?

Rooting is MUCH easier now. Read the instructions, 3 times before you do it.

Just because you root, doesn't mean it gets rid of capabilities of the phone. You can have a bone stock phone with the exception of it having root access. That is the beauty of it, you decide what you want to do with your phone. You can just use SetCPU or use TitaniumBackup and uninstall applications that you don't want or need.

I give thanks to root!

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a chance to try easy tether, but I've heard people liking that better than PDAnet. I've also heard people liking PDAnet better. PDAnet just worked for my needs, so I never bothered trying anything else.

Pretty sure you can Root without having to use a custom ROM (although, I haven't rooted yet either because the only reason for me wanting to do that is to increase performance and battery life). I think Unrevoked was the rooting method that allows for that to work. Here are a couple rooting threads that explained it step-by-step:

I figure that i'm paying for internet access, it shouldn't matter if i'm using it on the phone or with my computer (as via tether) ...of course, the carrier has bandwidth considerations but their use of the word 'unlimited' means that it shouldn't matter how many devices I have sharing that link.

I just don't like that each time they speed up the phone's ability to download that they'll up the price of their net access (+10 3g -> 4g), and on top of that, charge additional for how it's used (Potentially $30 as I believe this number is for the hardware hotspot and not necessarily the same as would be for the evo 3D).

As to rooting the phone, I would imagine that they would refuse warranty service (although I state this being aware that there was a ruling issued regarding the practice of jail breaking devices -- i'm not sure of the details regarding contractual obligations or if that also applies to rooting) ...so I figure i'd only root once my phone is no longer under warranty. A cautious approach.

There is also the question of what methods they might have available to detect unauthorized use of tethering or hotspot functionality.

I still have my Sprint HTC Hero, and i have used both tether apps ...they work fine in a pinch ...I'm considering getting the Evo 3D if i'm fortunate enough to attain gainful employment sometime soon :) Being able to use it as a hotspot would be nice but not at the expense of eliminating my home network internet service at this time especially if there are (im/ex)plicit limitations.

I'm not currently in a 4G area anyway, I bet they'd still add the up charge though! ;)

The "up charge" was changed to be applied to all Smartphones. So no...you wouldn't be up charged for having a 4G capable phone. You'd be charged for Premium Data for having a smartphone.

I decided to 'sign up' on sprint to see if the deal is as i remembered. It does seem that putting a 4g phone on a $69.99 plan adds $10 to the plan. considering my bill, it seems that it's just a smartphone charge and not a 4G charge as I previously believed! ...good news for me ...and better news (or is it) for my desire to grab an Evo 3D to retire my Hero! :) ...thanks for the info jdsingle

For the most part, I have noticed no differences btw EasyTether and PDANet. Both worked great for me. With the free versions you cannot view secure wibsites (i.e. email... basically anything with a password).

Rooting with unrevoked3 is easy and only takes about 5 mins. There are walk-throughs on youtube to guide you. You actually download a "program" to your computer, connect your phone via USB, and it does it all for you. When you're done, the EVO is/looks/runs as if it were stock (but you're rooted!)

I good custom ROM that I use and is based off HTC Sense is the SprintLovers ROM. There are step-by-step directions at the awesome guys from xda's site. Again, this custom ROM looks almost stock, but has a few nice little extras/features. No bloatware, etc. Although, I dont think you overclock with it. (One of our awesome Mod's recommended it to me... Thanks EM!!).

Anyways, back to the upcoming and AWESOME EVO 3D! ;)

They don't need to really "come out" with one. It's already built in. If you are a data hog, they may take a look at where your data is coming from. I have seen cease and desist letter from Sprint posted here before... That said, it has a lot to do with how much you (and others) use the plan.

I mentioned this as a reason why I think the "unlimited" won't be around much longer. It's the few ruining it for the masses in their lust for downloading dozens of gigs of whatever the hell they download. I was basically told to go to another carrier that tends to throttle people when all I was doing was musing about the future.
