Root HTC Evo 4G Always Asks to Power Down or Restart

I have search the world over but I think this problem is unique and now I need some help.
HTC Evo 4G rooted with unrevoked-forever
I lost the use of my power button last month and searched that problem to find the solution is the Nolock app. I

I sat here thinking before answering....how can one either flash a rom, navigate recovery, navigate to bootloader screen without a power button. :hmmmm:

What recovery do you have? Is it a touch screen type recovery? Or do you have the recovery that you need all three buttons (power, volume up, volume down) to navigate?

It almost sounds to me like the problem with the non functioning power button has developed a new problem. Perhaps the phone thinks that the power button is constantly being pushed down?

You know THAT makes a lot of sense.
Unfortunately my recovery would be through my boot screen. I think nandroid??. Is there another way?
By the way thanks for the quick response
I saw a vdo of a hot gun machine type thing that would heat the board to soften the soldering of the button for replacement. Nobody around here will have one.
 
What do you propose? Replacement of the power button?
Booting into recovery doesn't necessarily have to be done via bootloader...that is an app called quickboot I think is the name, that allows you to choose to boot into recovery.
But still, your recovery won't do any good if you cannot use the power button. :(
Are you in a position to upgrade at all?

Shoot, I've got 2 Evo 4G's collecting dust....perhaps you would be interested in one of them :dontknow:
 
It sounds as if the power switch (which is what the power button presses) is intermittent. When you press it, it doesn't make contact, but it sometimes makes contact by itself. The switch is usually a tiny piece of brass, held out by its own springiness, and you press it against a contact. If the end of the piece of brass breaks off, and it's floating around inside the switch, you can get anything from a momentary (like fractions of a millisecond) contact to a continuous contact, depending on where it moved to. So you get all sorts of strange, seemingly not connected, things happening.

The solution is replacing the switch - which costs less than a dollar. But the labor to disassemble the phone, unsolder the old switch, solder in the new one and reassemble the phone is going to leave you feeling ripped off. But trust me, the guy who does the work spent months learning to use a soldering iron on such tiny parts without destroyinbg the phone, and that's what you're paying for.

My standard recommendation applies here. If you think you'll save money by buying the switch and doing the work yourself - unless you've soldered microcircuitry before - DON'T! By the time you repair the damage you caused, then repair the damage you caused repairing that damage, then ... - you could have bought 2 new phones. Then you'll decide to bring it in to pay to get it fixed - and you'll find that no one will work on it, because they have no idea how much damage you've caused, it's going to take them hours to diagnose it all and when they tell you how much they're charging you for just the diagnosis, you'll decide it's cheaper to buy a new phone. Leaving them with an unpaid bill (but the guy who worked on the phone still gets paid for the hours he spent on it) and a case full of parts they can use to repair another phone (which aren't worth as much as the bill).

When I owned my cellphone stores, I'd fire anyone who took a phone in for repair that had been opened and worked on by the owner. (I'd have to eat almost the entire wholesale price of the phone to replace the damaged one.) You don't set your own broken leg, and that's simple mechanics, so don't try fixing complex electronics yourself. (People have been known to set their own broken bones fairly successfully, and people have been known to repair their own cellphones, but they're the exception, not the rule.)

Neither smelkusMOD nor TWRP recovery require the use of the power button ;).

True, but how would he go about installing it? With either the fastboot method or a PC36IMG file, he'd have to go into bootloader and choose options there with the power button?

As far as putting your sd card into a used device and ready to go, it still requires you to activate the device, then set it up as the device would have been factory reset. Is that what you mean by "place my card into another same phone and go"?

adb reboot bootloader takes you directly to fastboot, where the recovery can be flashed. Then fastboot reboot and adb reboot recovery gets you directly into recovery ;). No need to touch the device at all.

Now I surmise that no matter what he does as far as changing recoveries, flashing roms, clearing cache or dalvik, will help his power button issue.
I think he is starting to have issues with the button:(

The power button actually worked twice yesterday but quickly stopped and asked to restart or power down again. I do think it's the button itself and any reflashing or recovery will not remedy this problem. It has played nice nice for the last couple of days. I think a new phone is the only direction, though not eminent today.

You guys are great, knowledgeable, and very helpful. (sometimes WAY over my head):)

Well, if you decide you'd be interested in a used Evo, hit me up.
Otherwise, yeah, I think your power button is getting/is boogered and it seems to replace it would be kinda tricky based on Rukbat's post ;)
 
AH HAH!

FYI for anyone interested in this problem.
Sometime yesterday the power menu came up as usual without me knowing and got into the Airplane Mode. My phone stopped receiving data for phone and internet like it should. I was super busy all day and evening and didn't want to deal with the phone issue for a while so I never thought about it, thinking I needed the power button to disengage the Airplane Mode.
I noticed all day and night into this morning it NEVER displayed the power menu as it's done for days now. Hmmmm Odd Now I'm thinking about the phone!
Then I remembered I can go into settings/ wireless and networks and turn Airplane Mode off. When I did the power menu instantly displayed and has several times in the last few minutes. NOT the power button problem I assumed.

I think it IS software and flashing is in order. Any thoughts?

Not sure but what I do know, is the recovery and bootloader are independent of the OS. So if you power button doesn't function in either recovery or bootloader screens, then it is not software related.

You can try, somehow, listed above by the Capt, install a touch recovery and flash a different rom:)
 
....and the hits keep coming!

Now when the screen times out at 1 minute and goes dim the phone shuts down. I have to remove the battery to reboot the phone back up. I could set the time out to Never.

It was my "No Lock" app set to allow lock. I'm getting dizzy.

Thanks Mikestony for the newer phone. My problem with the old one kept bugging me. Remember I have no power button so I couldn't do a nandroid backup. I have one of 2011. I wanted to transfer all sms texts and phone log records. so I adb pushed them to my PC. Now they're not on the old phone at all. In fact all my apps and settings are gone. It's like a clean install. I did a complete copy/ paste of the (on my system) e: drive several times over the last year as recent as 4/28/14.

Can I simply copy that image back to the old phone and take them both to a Sprint store and have them xfer everything?
Can I simply pull the recovery folders from the adb backups from my pc and everything work correctly on the newer phone? I read here where that may cause shout out problems because the system wouldn't be able to write with permissions (??)

Crap....man!
