Root HTC EVO 4G "If you cannot get into recovery"

"Recently there have been problems with people (who happen to be running cm7) getting stuck in a bootloop without the ability of getting into recovery to get out of it. If this happens, there may still be ways of getting your phone working, but it is going to require expertise that is currently above the knowledge of the author of this guide Make a thread and someone will be happy to try and help."

Well that sums it up, I've tried recovery/roms pushed from fastboot and from zip updates and the same thing boot screen for a sec black bootscreen again reboot. Pwr vol+ works but recovery is no mas, I've pushed various recommended recovery and boot images, and they all say success but have zero effect. I'm guessing it's that s-on is on but all ways I've found to deal with s-on seem to req a working recovery any ideas?

Hello there scottfree1:)
Welcome to AF! :D

Do I understand correctly that 2 things are an issue:
1. You cannot get into recovery.
2. You cannot install a recovery via either the PC36IMG or Fastboot method.

Does your phone function other than that?

Edit: also, for your security, I have removed both the Serial # and the IMEI # from your above posts.
A. Those 2 bits of info are not needed for troubleshooting this and,
B. Folks with ulterior motives can use that info for, well, nefarious reasons. :)

Should I be trying to get s-off? I downloaded a 32bit linux and was gonna give rumrunner a shot but I'm not sure if I'm just spinning my wheels going that direction?

Correct, I can send a recovery image and have "success" and I can pwr/vol+ and "install" zips both recovery & full roms but when I choose reboot or select "recovery" from the menu just get a loop you can seen here..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtqlLZYoMc4&feature=youtu.be

How do you "install" full roms without a recovery?

Try this, if you phone can boot up fully, download this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot&hl=en

that app, when opened, will allow you to make the choice to boot into recovery.
Let me know what happens. :)

When I say a full 200mb+ standard sprint rom file from here Supersonic Shipped ROMs 9/8/2011 | HTC EVO 4G | XDA Forum rename it PC36IMG.zip put it at the root of my sd, it finds it, runs the install wait.. blue progress bar.. wait.. 5 min or so and it completes without any error message, but with zero effect. Same with recovery zips, tried CW, twrp, AmonRa, smelkus etc. and still have yet to get into a rec env. The only way I've found into "recovery" from the pwr/vol+ menu is there another super secret handshake way in? I've tried Power vol+/vol-, Power vol-, power soft button etc. but p/vol+ seems the only key combo avail?

I've also done fastboot flash recovery recovery.img / fastboot format cache / fastboot format userdata / fastboot -w flashall (with the stock sprint rom imgs) and all
"succeed" but nothing changes ;-/

Aside from the app I linked, could there be an option for getting into recovery at all is via "adb reboot recovery"? I'm not too knowledgeable with ADB :o
I think you need to be booted up and running to use ADB correct?

"fastboot devices" finds the phone but "adb devices" doesn't find anything, does adb require a different driver? All the androids seem to have 3 drivers but I've never found anything about what each does?
