Root HTC EVO 4G stuck on reboot, how can I fix it without losing current data

Hello everyone,

Sorry if it has been previously asked, but I haven't found any information that shows how to fix this issue without having to lose all your data.

My phone was rooted by a friend October 2011. A couple months later I had an issue where the ROM I had at the time (forgot which one) stopped working and wouldn't let me do anything, so I ended up having to restore an old backup and lost all the data I had since I had installed the ROM. So I have been using the stock ROM ever since and I haven't had a problem (besides the speed and having to decline every time it asks to update). One time I accidentally pressed update and my phone was stuck on reboot and I managed to fix it, but again I had to wipe my data and restore an old backup.

Yesterday my phone all of a sudden turned off and started infinitely rebooting (I don't know if I accidentally pressed update or something-- I wasn't paying attention too much when I was using it)... and now I've tried multiple times to fix the problem to no avail. I even tried what someone suggested online which was to go to the cwm and press recovery (the person suggested that you hit recovery and that afterwards a triangle with an exclamation point would show up--never did on mine). I then had another menu pop up so I hit reboot. Still not working.

Anyone know how to fix the rebooting problem without wiping data? I don't care about the texts or call log or contacts. I just care about the info on my Colornote app (which automatic backups are supposed to be saved but I don't know how to retrieve them know) & on my Jorte app. Besides that, I don't care much for the data since it's all on my SD card. I will be getting a new phone soon, either the HTC One or Galaxy S4 since my EVO 4G is like this.

Also, are the backups on the Colornote app saved on the Market so that when I get my new phone I can just restore, or are they lost forever? The colornote app is also on the SD card, but the Jorte is not because I used it as a widget for tasks & calendar.

Please help! Thank you :)

Never mind. I found a site suggesting to Wipe Dalvik Cache & Wipe Cache. I did just that, and it fixed the problem! Back to normal and didn't lose any data! :D So this can be advice for someone who is experiencing this problem.

thanx for posting your follow up.

yeah wiping dalvik cache and cache usually fixes most issues.

the reason why you do not get the red triangle is because you are rooted and have a custom recovery. those that are not rooted will get the red triangle.

you should also think about making a nandroid backup. this will backup your phone including your data from your apps and such. what recovery do you have?

I think CWM? I don't know if that's what you're asking. Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the terms. I just know how to do certain things. lol ^_^

By the way, the reason I don't do a nandroid backup is because I don't have enough space on my 8GB SD card anymore. Plus, I'm planning to get a new phone soon (either Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One, don't know which one's best yet). But I have done so in the past. When I had the ROM my friend installed (I remember now, it's called SIEU I believe), I had an error pop up because I had restored data from the stock ROM, and it forced me to have to restore the backup I made before he flashed the ROM. I don't think I will be rooting my new phone because of problems like that and since I'm not an android genius like you guys, I'm afraid I will mess up my phone. lol

just be careful with cwm as it has been known to be very buggy and does not wipe very well.

amon ra 2.3 or smelkus is better IMO.

well as far as nandroid backup goes. i would make at least one and save it on your computer. i would even backup your sd card to the computer as well just in case.....but that is me.

if you just take a few extra minutes or see we can teach you the ins and outs of being rooted. it really is not all that it seems to be. for me rooting creates less problems and there is actually more tools available to help troubleshoot if there are any issues that comes up.

i will always root my phones because it free me from the stranglehold of what the carriers and manufacturers force you to accept. plus rooting does improve battery life and performance.....i mean my htc evo 4g lte gets almost 2 days worth of battery life with moderate usage!!!!!!

i can't wait for when i get to upgrade this year. right now i'm waiting for either the note 3 or the rumored htc t6(htc one max) to be released.

just remember that AF is always here when you need us....and we have great members who are always willing to help you when needed.

thank you! and I don't think I would get the note or a huge htc one because I don't my phone too big. I think Galaxy S4 and HTC One are perfect sizes. I'm leaning more towards S4 because of HTC One's lack of SD card capability and non removable battery. Plus I want to try out Samsung's phone since I've had the HTC EVO for so long. Which one of the two is less buggy and better?

less buggy?

both s4 and htc one are great devices.....you can't go wrong with either of them.....i was on the roped for either one of them when i found out about my eligibility. but i restrained myself and will be waiting to one of the phablets that will be coming out in the 4th quarter of this year.

anyways if you want i would check into our forums:
Samsung Galaxy S4 - Android Forums
HTC One - Android Forums

and we even have many threads in the Device/Carrier Comparisons - Android Forums

here is one of them:
