HTC EVO as a modem?

I installed PDAnet on my new EVO for several reasons.
1) the tethering option provided by sprint requires that you enable the hot spot capability. (I get the same error message trying to enable hotspot or tethering without paying the $30 per month fee, and when paying the fee they work)
2) I need tethering in both 3G and 4G environments.
3) It is cheap, and free intially so I can try it out.

It works great on the 3G network (4G not available yet)
So I removed the $30 "feature" and I am using PDAnet

HERE IS THE ISSUE: After installing PDAnet the Sprint TV application no longer works. When I attempt to run any submenu within this application
I get: "You are not authorized to use this application. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. (3000)"

Sprint confirms I am authorized and enabled for this service and they have tried a number of things from their end to fix it. Eventually they tell me to hard reset the phone which I am not interested in doing because my setups will be lost.
I call HTC and they tell me it is Sprint software issue.
Has anyone experienced this problem after installing PDAnet?

Finally found someone knowledgeable at a sprint store and they reset the Sprint application to fix the problem. Phone customer support was unaware of this process.
Everything works now.

Why give up the Droid? Unfortunately, unless you qualify for some discount plan it gonna be around $90 with taxes and Sprint's charge.

i kept having the error 67 message every time i connected the evo to the computer via the usb cable. once i was able to connect the cable to the computer without that message, i was golden.

the trick for me was to go into phone settings, wireless and networks, and uncheck "Internet sharing". When Internet Sharing is unchecked, i am able to get a "mobile network" connection. Once i got that, i was able to tether via the PDANet software.

i dont think it matters what settings are in "connect to pc", because i have used 'disk drive', and 'Internet sharing' with continued connectivity to the internet. the only thing that would make my phone work was the "Internet sharing" setting in the "Phone Settings/Wireless and Networks" folder.

Over the last few months I have spoken with just about everyone at Sprint. I have been told 7 different stories about using the evo as a modem. I was even told that it is not supported by sprint and I would be billed hundreds of dollars when they catch me doing it. Also that it would overheat and start a fire (this was confirmed as a lie by Sprint so don

i just installed the pdanet app from the app store and it didnt work usb i went through the manual included with the phone and it says you should be able to connect to the internet via usb cable but i noticed every time i connected the phone it would automatically disable that feature im sure sprint tried to make it so you cant use the basic features of your phone which is bull in my book. well i was messing with it and you can get it to work via bluetooth for now until they figure out how to cut this off too lol. you have to install htc sync first because the driver with pdanet for the evo isnt up to date... maybe why you cant use the usb cable idk. then install pdanet and make sure your connection type for usb on your phone isnt set to enable internet use. i just used the sync only option. if you try to enable usb tethering it will automatically kill your phones connection to the internet and you have to disconnect the cable for your phone to reconnect the the internet (nazi bastards) anyhow pdanet allows you to use a bluetooth connection to the internet through your computer granted you have an adapter built in or have one. with this option it doenst trigger the disconnect upon connection to your computer via usb and you can charge your phone as you use it for a bluetooth modem. hopefully they dont do anything to disable this in the future but it definitely works for now i disconnected my wireless router to make sure and turned off wifi on my laptop browsed some web pages while connected to my phone and saw the 3g arrows working back and forth and im currently posting this thread through my phone connection! if they build it we will find away around it lol. if anyone knows how to use the internet with a usb cale or a different app let me know. hope this helps. thanks!!

I see that a lot of people are using the Evo as a modem. How is the speed? I am still in a 3G network, no 4G yet. But, I would like to dump my cable modem and just use this for laptop, PS3 connectivity, etc.

Online gaming is big in our house, so it has to be faster than a cable modem (or at least as fast).

Is this connection faster than the cable modem?

Comments appreciated!
