Root HTC EVO Design 4G - All Carriers - Root guide

Hmm, I've rooted 2 of these phones... As long as it says unlocked, it loaded the PH44IMG.zip file no problem... Maybe try re downloading the zip file...?

I just noticed the link for the PH44IMG.zip in the guid isn't working... let me know if you need it, i still have a copy of it...

I tried this root with my phone a few months back and I was having the same issue as ShadyNova so I eventually just gave up. Mine says Unlocked as well but it fails to load the PH44IMG file for whatever reason...but I was curious and willing to try again but just noticed the link in the guide doesn't work anymore so would u be able to send it to me so I could give it another shot? Thanks.

Here is the PH44IMG.ZIP file from the guide... I just tested it to make sure the bootloader sees it... I also remembered a similar situation I had like this before... The bootloader is picky about sdcards... I have better luck with smaller cards like 1 or 2 gb... Most of all, a fresh format with no volume name, and FAT(16)...

PH44IMG.zip

trying to root from damn i forget where i seen it posted. hope someone can help from info i am giving... i took this file ROMtoROOT_PH44IMG - Coopy and renamed it PH44IMG and loaded it to root of sdcard and got into bootloader and automatically goes threw 2 files and then the 3 file i get main vers is older error.
I thought i was gonna fly threw this process :( now phone off the mobile network :( i got hboot 1.30.oooo and software 1.11.653 blah, thats what i feel like.. someomne save meeeee...

Hello... Unless you are using this guide and the resources from it, it will be hard to help out... I have read in other forums that you can change the version info in the zip file, but that's something you'd do completely at your own risk...

I successfully rooted my boost htc 4g lte following your guide, tried to do the same on my son's,and it becomes stuck at parsing PH44 boot loader is unlocked. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Wrechild, Thanks i figured it out.

I got confused a couple times but i got it rooted, cwm, heavenly divine rebirth final, and fixed the wifi teether and kindom fastkernel. It took me a little over 4 hours.

Just need to figure how to learn how to change roms + kernels to see what i perfer to use and do it more efficently :)

Is there any apps that are a must to buy for swapping roms and kernels ? or root user apps? Should i invest in licenses copy of TB to restore backups of ROMS w/ my user and system settings?

I'm trying to root my phone using the root only method, I got through unlocking the loader okay, I copied the PH44IMG.zip over. First I got the main version is older or whatever error message, so I changed the .txt file version number, now it is hanging on the screen when it says parsing...[PH44IMG.zip]. I have waited for 15+ minutes on this screen and it never does anything else. Am I just being too impatient, or does anyone have any ideas? The guide says to wait a few minutes, but I think 15+ is more than a "few". I have to do a battery pull to get it out of this.

xxxxxxxxxx, I'm glad you got it going... :) as for Titanium Backup, yea I paid for the pro version only cause I really like the app and wanted to support the work that has gone into it...
As for rom switching apps, I just use CWM... Make nand backups with CWM, then just restore the backup to swap roms...

Asm92784, try to reformat the sdcard to fat 16 or 32... Could also try a different sdcard...

Hmm... I updated my last htc design without a problem... Now with my insurance replacement, it says that the Version is newer/or older... I forget which and said update failed. Any suggestions?

and now it doesn't want to connect with the mobile network either... what is this problem?

Never mind, the connection was the battery cover... retried with the file install on the SD, but still no go.

What are you trying to do on it??

Just root for now... My last one Like I said, I rooted without a problem... appearantly, you can change the version of that file, but I don't know how, and I don't want it to screw things up.

Weird... it seemed to go further, but it got stuck on "Parsing PH44IMG.ZIP" and wouldn't progress further. I pulled the battery and restarted it, and it seems fine, but still no root.

So . . . I used Wondershare MobileGo as prescribed, made a back-up of my phone . . . did the whole process (which of course cleared everything in memory on the phone), and when I went to restore it through Wondershare . . . the backup no longer existed for the phone. Nothing. All gone. Any ideas? Why didn't it actually keep anything I backed up? It's all gone. Nothing is there. Any idea why?

Chapter Two: Root Only

IMPORTANT NOTE:The root only method is for the Boost Mobile device ONLY!!! For any other carriers, skip this chapter and continue at the top of the next post. That would be chapter three, ClockWorkMod.

IMPORTANT NOTE:If you plan on installing a custom ROM, you do not need to use the Root Only portion of this guide. Skip directly to the next chapter, ClockWorkMod.

Here is a very simple root only method from Apache Thunder. You will need to put a file on the root of your SD card. Placing a file on the root of you SD card simply means not to put it inside any folders. Whether you remove your SD card or use USB doesn't matter. The file can be found at this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/ia0yno9ws6b7pdz/PH44IMG.zip then make sure it is on your SD card.

With the file on you SD card, replace the card in your phone if you removed it. Remove your battery, and with the SD card in your phone, place the battery back in the phone, do not turn it on. If you recall from unlocking your bootloader, to get to your bootloader you must hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time after placing the battery back in the phone. Do this now. Your phone should automatically go into hboot mode. If it does not say HBOOT in blue and white directly below the green text, choose the hboot option using the volume buttons and power button to select. Wait for the phone to check the SD card, some bright green text will show up. Give it a few more minutes, and if all goes well, you should be asked Do you want to start update? If you are sure you want to continue with this process, push volume up. If you are having second thoughts, then push volume down. If you continue with the process, do not remove the battery during the process.

When the process is complete, your phone will show the text Update Complete Press <POWER> to reboot. As it says, push the power button.

Congratulations! Your phone is now rooted! Make sure to remove the PH44IMG file off of your SD card. If you do not, your phone will try to re-install that file every time you enter your bootloader. It gets VERY annoying, and can erase all personal information each time.

If this is your last step, even if just for a while, then now would be a good time to restore your phone's backup. The process of restoring your backup will depend on which method you used, so that is up to you.

Thank you to Apache Thunder for this method!

Chapter Two point Five: PH44IMG Errors

I will post the different errors and their solutions here.

When I get into the bootloader with the file on my sd card it loads and then says that the main version i older update failed. What do I do to make it work?

Thanks a ton for this thread. I went through so many different guides before finding yours.

I have successfully rooted my Boost phone because of this.

A few issues I had and eventually overcame, over the past few days (not sure if some of this is redundant to your guide, since I had gotten past unlocking my phone before I came across this thread):

1. Unlocking phone. Couldn't get the PC to properly recognize the phone when in recovery-mode; running the fastboot stuff in the cmd prompt per HTC Dev, etc; not until I updated the driver manually (in Windows 7); and basically forcing it to use My HTC driver. (Properties, Update Driver, Browse my computer for driver software, Let me pick...)

2a. Your link to the PH44IMG.zip is bad, or it says it's blocked due to too much traffic. I would highly recommend putting it up on a torrent. 2b. Anyway, I was able to find a suitable PH44IMG.zip file elsewhere, after going through a few (can't link yet, as I'm too new. Thread title here on the forums where I was able to download the file is [ROOT] Stock Rooted Rom. No CWM required...).2c. I just had to modernize the android-info.txt file, as it would give me 'too old' errors during hboot. Simply changed line 3 to mainver: 1.26.573.7, and rezipped. Anyway, yeah, after a slight update to the text file, the file found in that thread actually rooted my phone!

This doesn't scratch the surface of just how much hair-pulling I actually went through since Friday, but should help serve as an extra tip.

Again, thank you! I verified that I'm actually rooted now through Root Checker. This is my first root ever. I've had the phone a couple years now (also my first smart phone).

If it wasn't for kind Mr. Banjandius, I never would have been able to root this confounded thing. This is my second root, and quite harder, even though my old phone I had to flash with ODIN. If I could thank you on here Banjandius, I would.

is cwm the only recovery available for this phone? im going to be soon unlocking and rooting this phone for a fam member and would prefer a working twrp since im familiar with it...anyone have a link?

also the whole process looks similar to what ive done on my htc rezound, except rooting....are there any updated pre-rooted roms out there?
