Help htc hero 1.5 OS wont update

I have an HTC hero with a 1.5 Android OS. Since a lot of apps only run 1.6 and higher, I really want to update the operating system, but my phone wont allow it. When I go to system updates, there is no way to update the operating system! I don't need 2.2, just 1.6 atleast. I can't seem to do it online either. Please help me! How can I update the OS?

What's your build number in Settings >> About Phone?

Even if you're not on T-Mobile as I am, it will explain why you're possibly not getting the update and work around it.
