HTC Hero drops data connection, won't consistently push emails as items arrive

I purchased a hero 2 weeks ago - set to as items arrive for my exchange account, and it's not working. not only will it not push the items, the data connection just stops for hours and hours once it goes to sleep. i won't have a single email pushed all night, despite the fact that when i manually sync it in the morning, i will have received over 30... i had an htc touch right before that and it worked like a dream on our exchange server...any suggestions?

About a week ago my hero started losing its data connection. After not using my phone for about 15 minutes it still getting bars and says 3g, or H or G or wifi...but I am unable to get Gtalk chats.
