Root HTC Hero recovery mode issue

Hey everyone. I'm new to this world of Android and I've been trying to root my HTC Hero but I've been having some issues.
I followed an online, step-by-step guide [here] and everything seemed to run smoothly up until I came to putting my phone in recovery mode. I pressed home + power and and it switched back on showing an image of a phone with a red warning symbol [like this, but obviously not using an Evo]. Now it won't respond to anything and I don't want to take the battery out in case it bricks my Hero.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could give me any help or advice.

Cheers, Beanz

I've moved your post over here to the Hero All Things Root area - I'm sure the helpful gang here can offer advice.

Sorry for the troubles, but anyway, welcome to the forums!

So you flashed your recovery in terminal emulator and then tried to boot to the recovery menu? It happens to some people. You can pull the battery, since you weren't actually flashing a rom or a radio or anything.

What's the build number for your firmware in Settings >> About Phone?

Hello there - I have a similar problem --
I
have just rooted my HTC hero, using androot.

  1. had some trouble booting into recovery mode using home/power - phone would hang with a red warning triangle and exclamation mark over an image of a hero.
  2. REsolved this by using 'quick boot' (android market).
  3. performed nandroid backup
  4. installed amon ra recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img
  5. now again I cannot get into the recovery mode. (same warning triangle - have to pull battery to start again)
    1. have tried home+power, quick boot, have tried from command prompt - always the same.
    2. from 'better terminal emulator' on the phone's screen result is 'not permited' (sic)
  6. then I inxstalled 'rom manager' and flashed clockworkMod recovery
    1. once again - first attempt booted into recovery without problem.
  7. I made a rom backup and prepared to flash the new rom via rom manager.
    1. But once again - recovery mode won't open, even using rom manager.

I am totally stumped - it is now 7 pm. and I began this well over 8 hours ago. round and round in circles ....

many thanks in advance!

alex

I can't say for sure, since I'm on my phone, but I am pretty sure I know what's wrong there.

Some firmwares have a script that reflashes the recovery image when you boot the phone normally. So you can flash the recovery image, then boot to it right away and it will work, but as soon as you boot normally the recovery menu is overwritten.

Its simple to remove, and I'll hunt down the solution for you later. (Unless Slug sees this first - he solved it).

ortholithos, do you have a file manager installed? (If not, grab Astro from the market).

If you open up your file manager, and go to /system/etc/, do you see a file called 'install-recovery.sh'? (Note that when you open the file manager you'll start in /sdcard/, so you'll need to hit the up a level button until you're in / and then navigate to /system/etc/).

I have the same problem. I do not have a recovery image on my htc hero 200. First let me say that the phone is rooted. I looked into the folder system/etc/ and I do not have the file install-recovery.sh in there. Can you tell me how to get my recovery image back. I have tried the fastboot usb and it did not work. I tried the adb and when I get to the part to flash the rercovery image I get the error message that flash image is not in the folder and I have made sure that I put it in the folder and still can not flash it. I tried the flashrec but it can not back up the recovery image and therefore will not allow me to flash the new recovery image. I have also tried the rom manager but the phone can not boot into recovery and therefore I can not flash the recovery image. Please help me.

Hi :)

It is very important that you are aware that there are two different HTC Hero phones, and they are totally different from each other. Using any of the root tools or guides from the wrong phone will likely break it.

This section is for the GSM Htc Hero, whereas you have the CDMA HTC Hero from Sprint. So please don't continue trying to replicate what you see discussed here. Unfortunately I don't know the first thing about how Sprint heros, but you'll should check out the guides in this section instead: HTC Hero (Sprint) - Android Forums

Both HTC Hero sections are quiet nowadays, so if you run into trouble with the guides there, I'd recomend asking for help in the android lounge here: Android Lounge - Android Forums
