HTC Hero slooow, lag, losing my patience ;-)

i have to go with the crowd and even mbell(cant live with you, cant live without you:D) of course the hero is slower STOCK than the droid, slower processor(if you did research before purchasing you would know) no sense UI(10-30mb @any given time) and also your complaining about programs like the browser opening slow(it does have to open a home page), and also the fact that this multi tasks(unlike the iPhone). YOU Made the decision to buy the phone, You made the decision to agree to the contract, NOW DEAL WITH IT. Stop asking for sympathy when you dont make any steps to help the problem yourself. I have Fresh 1.1, custom kernel and removed most of the sprint bloatware and my phone is FAST. Especially when the new OC kernel is done we will upgrade to that. You have two choices, CRY to us and sprint for your decision, or DO something about it. Forums dont like Whiners!

Well said. I dont understand how some people are surprised, dont they try the phone out first? I went to 5-6 different Sprint stores and used the Hero quite a bit each time. I went to different stores so I could make sure I wasnt trying one out that worked better or worse than most. I also wanted to see what the signal strength was like in different areas. I also did tons of research on it before I bought it, but thats just how I am. I dont like surprises with something important like my phone.

I didn't try it out. Hell, it was my first smartphone, it's not like I could have been disappointed lol.

Actually, my girlfriend (who works at Sprint), told me I'd love it more than any other phone Sprint had at the time, so she bought it for me for my birthday. I haven't looked back, and don't plan on leaving Android for a LOONNNGGG time (at least until something better and more fun comes out :P). I do plan on upgrading to whatever Sprint has new in October, without a hardware keyboard if possible (they're useless to me, I can't feel the little tiny buttons). But that's the nature of technology, more often than not, it's outdated before it even comes out.

What if his phone is having malfunctions and what he is saying is the truth? It could be that he had gotten a bad phone that needs some serious repair so he comes to us hoping to fix it and it doesn't work. I would suggest turning it into sprint, getting a new one, and if the lag still persists, then you are indeed expecting too much outta the phone.

Try rooting with Fresh 1.1 and using Gumbo Kernal 0.31. That solves all problems until HTC/Sprint fix the issue.

And if this doesn't work, then get the Samsung Moment. That doesn't come with any extra UI which shouldn't slow the phone down at all. I never heard of the moment lagging at all since (i believe) it uses all the android apps by default unlike the Hero which uses its own UI for mostly everything.

Getting away from the war here :p

I would imagine it would eliminate any lag though, with it turned off. And I don't have any problems with stock android.

You can download an app called "home switcher" to make it easier to switch then go into the app settings and change the defaults. Open the app, and change it right away.

Not good...

I have a G1, and HTC Hero. I want to love the Hero. Bed it. I've had it 4 months now, and just finding it is so gosh damn slow. I've reset it, removed all extra apps. I have no idea. I mean, by slow I mean, click to get a new text message, count, 1,2,3,4,5 and then you get to the message app.

Browser, painful. Isn't the network. I have 5mbps network wifi...App switching is painfully slow.

ANything I can do. I just cancelled my sprint contract because I just can't use this phone. Keyboard reaction is seconds delay to type.

Probably just going to root it and hack on it, but anybody have any last minute, I'm on the ledge about to seriously toss this phone against a Rock help.

If anybody wants, I can make a YouTube video of how frakin unresponsive this phone has become.

You may just have a dud. I'm on my second Hero -- first one had punishing lag and exhibited the same issues you're talking about in addition to other bizarre behavior. Flashed it a couple of times, tried different app configurations, etc., with really no significant improvement. After a few calls to HTC, they told me to take it in to a Sprint store and swap it out, and it's made a world of difference. May be worth a try...

i rooted. couldn't stand the lag no matter what settings i used.

my phone is now 100x better
I did too, mine is now 13% better. Still trying to manage my expectations on this phone, and then I play with an iPhone 3Gs and I get disappointed all over again.
Still worth it to not have to deal with AT&T, though.

13% better huh? You sure it is not 13.5% better? Lol.

Another non-rooter/non lagger here. I mean ever so slightly, but no where near what's being reported by some people. I'm curious, and excuse me if this has been brought up elsewhere, does the "with google' branding make any difference?
I've noticed that many people reporting lag issues aquired theirs back around launch time. Had mine about 4 weeks and 'with google' branding.

Thank you!

My stock HERO lagged so bad, it would constantly miss phone calls, because pressing the answer button simply wouldn't respond to my key presses. I would miss calls constantly.

Rooted/Rom/Kernel resolved all of my issues, 100%.

Bottom line, different people use their phone is different ways, and may tax the processor, ram, etc, more than others. If your phone is fine, great, if not, there are options. It's really that simple.

I live in an area where I almost always have full bars, so that is/was not the culprit for lag, by the way.

If your phone lags do something about it.

Fairly simple.

Mike Bell has a phone that doesn't lag.

Mine did. I tried about everything I knew and it didn't work.

So I rooted it. Fresh 1.1 Gumbo Kernel and SetCPU

No lag. Quicker response. Better battery life.

I was reading in numerous forums for a couple months before I decided to go with the Hero over the Moment and tried them both at the Sprint store and Best Buy and I love my phone. If I didn't it would have been my fault not Sprint's or HTC's. I chose the phone they didn't force upon me.

Its just frustrating...I start a thread on dust, get flammed away for being the 'only' one with problems...30 days later, 50% have dust...was I wrong...nope.

The phone is slow, way way slower than the droid. I classify laggy as holding a phone in your hand...why holding? Because if it was faster, you would be doing!

I digress...I am not wrong, I just have limited tolerance to a phone that has trouble keeping up with an iPhone. I absolutely loathe Apple products, but you gotta hand it to them...their phone is still faster...even than the Nexus one.

arg!

the iphone is not faster than the nexus ..stop it.

I rooted my Hero and istalled Fresh 1.1 and Gumbo kernel .31 and then used the free overclock tool in the market as well as an application killer to keep it from running programs in the background, and it is a lot faster than it was stock. Well worth the half hour of work.

I have major lag and freezes too. Anyone know how to to root cellular south hero, it would be greatly appreciated.

I could be wrong, but I think the phone itself roots the same regardless of who your carrier is. I'm sure someone will correct me if this is wrong.

I believe there's a guide on XDA for rooting the cellular south Hero.

Link:XDADeveloperWiki - CDMA Hero Guides

LOL, yea, i tried many an hour and could not get it to take, also no way to back up in case it went south, and too many items will not work afterwards also, so not really worth the effort. It is definitely not for the average user to do, even tho I am an IT person, this is a rather difficult procedure.
