Yes. Go into messages app and press Menu > Settings
Scroll down to Select Sound and tap it.

If you have your own sounds (not the default ones on your device) you want to use, you need to put them on your SD Card.

Create a folder in "sdcard" called "media".
In there create a folder called "audio".
In there create 2 folders - "notifications" and "ringtones" and put your sounds in them.
"ringtones" is used for the phone ringer
"notifications" for everything else (email alerts, sms, etc)

Might want to check out ASTRO File Manager v2.2.2 Application for Android | Productivity in the Market. It's file manager and comes in very handy when working with files/folders.
