Help HTC Internal Memory is too small! Help please

I know this is a particular problem with the HTC Desire and it's now starting to really annoy me. I have a 16GB memory card but most of my apps can't be moved to the SD card. I only have a few apps and I can't update about 10 of them now due to lack of space on the internal memory.

I don't feel confident about rooting and I've tried deleting caches, emails and data but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I am used to an ipod touch and having masses of apps and this is getting me very fustrated. If I can't remedy this situation I am tempted to get an iphone which would be a shame because in all other respects I like my HTC desire phone.

Can anyone make any suggestions of things I haven't tried yet other than rooting? Thank you

Move apps to SD does work.. to a degree.

Rooting is scary but the only way to go. Once you get the idea it actually isn't that difficult to to... you just have to follow the steps.

for me..
Unlocked my phone
I reversed apps to sd tweak
Unrevoked my phone
Backed up phone.. nandroid
gparted a memory card
Flashed a new rom.

It actually took me longer to read all about it than to do it. Now I've got every app I wanted including those I couldn't install before and still have nearly half the memory left.

I'm planning on rooting my wife's phone this weekend.

Rooting is the best long term solution imho. There are way of forcing more app data to SD via the faqs and guides here (I would link you but I'm on my phone). This could help to a certain extent.
If you consider rooting, the guides and folks here are the best resources and don't be shy to ask any questions. Rooting is quite daunting but not as hard as it seems!
