HTC is going to dig themselves into yet another deep hole

They're starting the same trend again. Same EXACT internal specs, with a different exterior shell. They'll do this for a year and a half, releasing at least 30 phones with the snapdragon and 576MB of ram; but before they decide to change the internal specs, people will get fed up with all of the choices that they have, won't be able to decide, and go with an iPhone. Same fate that windows mobile 6.x had, and soon to be Android's fate. That isn't stopping me from selling my 3GS and getting a nexus one tho :)

Who else agrees?
 
I think you might be able to blame the carriers for this a bit (or maybe almost completely). The phone manufacturers have to get a carrier to carry their devices and the carriers will request specific changes to be unique so that they can brand it their own with their logo and to be distinct over their competitors. It's part of the way the manufacture/carrier business works right now.

For Apple, there is one manufacturer (Apples) and they tell their one carrier (so far, AT&T) that they'll support the iPhone and be happy about it (and AT&T is happy to carry a big manufacturer with the client base their monthly bills). If/when Apple opens up to other carriers, Apple will be able to strong-arm them to just carry the iPhone without any changes.

So this is what is behind some the the frustration with the Nexus One I think...Google could have branded a phone that always looks the same and is available on different carriers and their phones (and their upgrades) always look the same. Google didn't want to do this though and it's just a different business model, although it might not/might work better than Apple's in the long run.
 
i dont agree simply because thats how pretty much all cellphones have been since the beginning of time.
 
So your theory is that someone will see a phone (which they like better than the iPhone) and see other phones like it (all of which they like better than the iPhone) and get so confused that they'll make a choice that would be worse (to them) than any other?

I'm gonna bet you aren't a psychologist or economist.
 
I was listening to the most recent "Android Guys" podcast yesterday and the contributors came to the exact opposite conclusion i.e. the vast majority of users simply don't care about CPU clock speed, RAM configuration and all the other minutae we obsess about here. They choose their handsets based simply on how they're going to use it. Text message addict? A physical keyboard will be top of the list.... Social butterfly? Facebook/Twitter/Buzz integration is essential for you.... Want to customise the interface to the n-th degree? Vanilla Android suits you. sir.... You get the idea, I'm sure.

The conclusion was that Android will take off big-time as a consumer platform precisely because of this variety. Consumers love choice.
 
Come on... you are kidding right? The first phones with the SnapDragon processor are coming to market and you're worried about the success of the line and if the market will be saturated with TOO MANY different phones??? Well, unless you like having the SAME thing in your pocket year after year (iPhone anyone?) then I would worry. So obviously I disagree, the different phones are a GOOD thing because it will suit and reflect different personal tastes. The handset market is well moving away from the HARDWARE issues and more focused on the OS and software without any doubt, so concerns over your OP should be minimal at best.

Edited to add: Oh, I almost forgot, PLEASE don't compare ANYTHING Android to WinMo... there is absolutely NO comparisons... lolz... ;)
 
your right about winmo to android, android has alot of catching up to do. especially with the new zunephone

I don't think it's the issue of choice, more of the fact that the Android OS is so splintered and a lot of handsets may get left out in the cold, as carriers decide not to update the OS as well as the handset makers, not just HTC, and that in of itself will frustrate people the most. That and customer service issues between the carrier, handset maker and Google. It can be a real chore to get the proper help in a timely fashion if at all. The fact that new phones being released with 1.5 or 1.6 boggles my mind, especially since one cannot just go to Google.com and plug in the phone and upgrade the OS to the present level. These issues to me seem to be the ones bugging me, as well as the people I run into in real life. Heck I would even be willing to pay for the upgrades, no problem there, just make them available to everyone who wants them. People put their intellectual effort and time into it, I see no problems with paying for upgrades.
 
See I would get fed up with apple coming out every year or so with a new phone that has 1 new thing better than the last. That is why I hate that. By the time I would get settled into my Iphone another one would be on the way. Where as most phones stay the same just get new software improvements. Any phone can update their software but not apples.
