Help HTC Locations/Route 66 Licence nag problem

RichLiv

Lurker
Hi there

Ever since I chose the 30 day premium navigation option on HTC Desire HD Car Panel (aka Route 66) last year and it expired, whenever I have

a) GPS on
b) My phone plugged into an external TeckNet battery pack

HTC Locations pops up and tries to get me to upgrade by buying a licence, which I wasn't going to do and am even less inclined to do with this kind of tactic. However this kind of s**t is preventing me from using my phone as a bike computer - what are my options ?

1) I can't find any way to remove HTC Locations/Car Panel and other forums suggest it can't be done without rooting my phone

2) I can't find any reason it happens only when my external battery is plugged in - so I can use bike apps like Strava for short rides but anything over 2 hours and I have to use the external battery, at which point I'm screwed as above.

Help ! What can I do ? I am thinking the best course of action is to root the phone and remove Locations - anyone got any other spin on this ?

Cheers

Richard

Have a look at the navigation self opening topics either in troubleshooting or main section. There are many of us with this problem, mine has just gone back to HTC, though you may be able to try cleaning out your USB socket with a can of pressurised air.

Thanks for the info, I saw your thread re the same thing before. I had already cleaned the microusb port with a cocktail stick and a little isopropyl alcohol as it was failing to charge properly due to dirt. That fixed that problem - seems that the current problem was still down (as some have suggested) to dirt reducing the resistance of the cable once plugged in and triggering this strange behaviour. I bought a brand new charging cable and what do you know, it all work just fine now when I plug my external battery in. D'oh.

Ps anyone else who is thinking of using their android phone as a bike computer, don't do what I did and mount an additional external battery and plug it into the phone unless it can all be in a sealed package somehow (sealed from the elements, that is). I have a bike kit for my Desire HD but chose not to zip the holder up fully so I could run a lead from the extra battery to the phone. I didn't consider the chances of dirt getting in but seems that it happened quite quickly. Just though I'd mention it.
