HTC M8 User reviews - Thoughts on your device? Battery usage/life? -Issues/comments

Ment to be or not - my are loose too. Also it seems i managed to push in the plasticy cover of secondary camera. I did not touch it, the phone is 1 day old, spend 6h on my desk and 2h in front pocket. Htc mocking samsung for the plastic - our company has 11 s4, and they are identical. My wife's m7 is finished terribly, my m8 has loose buttons and lens cover. Htc should raise the quality imo :(

Could you give us some pictures of the lens cover using your wife's M7? We would like to see if this is a quality control issue.

Thanks!

There have been some reports with build quality issues. I have not heard anyone complain about the Sprint variant specifically, but several others have brought up quality issues with the buttons and a strange issue with the rear 2MP glass becoming dislodged.

Hopefully this is just a quirk and not a major issue.

What are your thoughts on the phone's build quality? In relation to other phones?

I had one delivered the day they were available online through AT&T. I loved the phone, but soon noticed loose volume and power buttons as well as the speakers and screen not flush with each other.

Went to the AT&T store today and they replaced it, no questions asked. However, I found that this one also has a loose volume and power button (although not as bad as before) as well as problems with the speakers again.

The red is the problem areas, where I can feel that the phone is not flush with the outside edge, while the green areas were fixed when I got the exchange - meaning that the screen and speakers are now flush with each other.

Overall, I love the phone and wouldn't trade it for any other model - however I am somewhat disappointed by the lackluster quality control.

I realize that it's hard to make every unit perfect since they're metal and what not but I wish HTC would have put in more effort. At the store, I played around with the LG G2 and although I didn't like the cluttered software, I did appreciate that the face of the phone felt solid and perfect.

Merged the 2 threads together since they are pretty much related, just trying to keep the section clean, cheers

In this link, you'll find a representation of some of the quality issues mentioned here in the M8 forum (most notably, the loose buttons):

I subscribed to this channel a while back, found the reviews to be informative & unbiased.

The detailed reviews from Erica are worth the time (coming soon for the M8),covering just about every imaginable topic/setting,& they're time-coded,so that you can skip over topics you're already familiar with.

Great video. The part I found funny when she says "Some people complain when they shake their phone it rattles"

...Excuse me sir... Why are you shaking your phone?

Did get a nice picture capture from that video showing the differences in buttons. The gunmetal grey one is definitely the way it should be (and the way mine is), The other one is definitely a manufacturing defect.

Quick background:
Coming from an HTC Evo 4G LTE, I had a plethora of issues with defective phones. I had it replaced 4 or 5 times, basically I lost track because I was back in the Sprint store on a weekly basis. Even after getting a model that worked, the LTE antenna was horrid. Only because I loved what HTC was doing with the ONE that I chose to stick with them instead of turning to another smart phone provider.

Build Quality:
The first thing you notice when you open the box is the same beuitful design. By far the most elegant phone to date. Other phones feel like Barbie toy phones in conparison. I messed with my girl friend's m7 and was skeptical about the round design and no black varient, but to my surprise it was much more appealing in person. The only drawback is the length of the phone but I'm aware that it is necessary for the hardware.

Sound:
The only reason to mention this is because of the amazing BoomSound. While I could not distinguish much of a difference from the m7, the m8's sound is still a surprise every time you play music from it. The sound alone makes the phone more valuable than other devices in my opinion.

Reception:
This was a concern with my older device. The m8's reception is great even while being 90% metal. The 4G is much faster. I have capped at 25+ Mbps so far (Sprint obviously) where my old device would surprise me with around 8 on a good day. In conparison, my family members have seen only up to 12 Mbps on the S3(still Sprint).

Battery:
I have not tested out many smart phones to get a feel for what's good in conparison, but from my use it is excellent. The only times I noticed the battery falling fast is from playing big games, downloading a lot, and using the GPS; but that's only normal especially when you have to take the incredibly fast processor into account. If you run on power saver mode you will be surprised by how long the device lasts. I easily get through a whole day with some time to play games at the end of the day to kill the battery. Even when not in power saver mode, it's hard to try to kill the battery even if you're doing it intentionally. Also, with the new EPSM you can turn the device into basic phone that's touch screen and the battery will last for litteral days or even weeks according to HTC. I have not used it for extended periods but from my use I can believe them.

Camera:
This is the only area that is on the weak end and prevents this device from being considered a perfect phone in my eyes. The pixel quality is obviously on the low end but the overall appearance of pictures are good. It does have a few weak areas, I've noticed mainly with a large contrast in light and dark to be the most noticeable. However, the camera should not be over looked. The features in the camera very useful and only a few could be gimmicky. The effects could use a few tweaks but may be fixed in updates. Overall, I'm happy with the camera and anyone looking for a good camera in most situations instead of a great camera in less situation should consider the m8.

Other:
One of the main things that drive me to stay with HTC is their UI. Samsung's UI is extremely cluttered, laggy, and full of bloatware. Not to mention the biggest turn off for me in the cartoon like font and appearance. HTC's UI is very clean, laggless, and easy to navigate.
I was also skeptical about the on-screen buttons. After using the phone since a few days after the launch, I have grown to like them. They're more responsive than capacitive which can be good or bad for some, but personally is a welcomed integration from default android.

Sitting here watching the football and my new charger has just blow up!
Luckily phone is ok.
I suspect it just can't handle the fast charging... I was suspicious of its high output. It has always run hot.
Uk charger btw.

Was it the charger that came with the phone?

Thanks for posting that video , others will have to keep a look out to make sure they don't have the same defect. It could definitely cause a lot of issues, including letting dust into the camera :(

I still think you just got a bad one, though. The one I have does not have any defects. I would definitely take it back, that is an unacceptable flaw.

Thx, I think I fixed the loose lens cover by pressing the front speaker with my magic thumbs :thumb::thumbdown:

Lol, you talking about the football I assume. Yes Liverpool did beat Man City!
Charger went boom, bit of smoke but no case breech so it all looks the same.

That would be a faulty charger or outlet than, nothing to do with the phone. Bet it smells nice and cooked in there. 1.5A is nothing. I use a 2.1A rapid charger and it runs great with this phone.

How fast does that charge? I ran my m8 to 0% yesterday (was nice to have it actually get to 0, my other phones would die at 5 or 7% or so, also nice that it displayed a strikethrough in the battery icon at 1%, and that it hung on at 1% for quite a while) and it charged to 100% using the included charger, with the phone off, in 130 minutes. Will be doing this test again with a 1 amp charger to compare. It was tracking close to 1% per minute for the first half of the charge, then was a little slower for the second half.

Okay. When you say about your volume rocker is loose, are we talking about just a little wiggle so I can have a little bit of give to it? Or are we talking lose as in you're afraid the button just might fall out of place, or is it supposed to be ridiculously tight

should not be able to wiggle the buttons around with lots of play. You can see the a few posts above, or watch the video posted by Kolio. (Post 186 & 187)

hi guys.
after about a week with m8 i really like it :-) build is super solid on mine.
great speed between apps.
biggest surprise was front speakers... great! :-)
hopefully call sound issue fixed by factory reset, but if not then will return it.
led only one color for notifications is a limitation for me :-\ but rooting might sort that.
..overall, best phone I've used :-D
cheers
Dan

..oh yeah, battery.. much better than s3
