Is there any way to go with the default messaging app and browser for android 2.2 or are we stuck with what HTc gives us? What im looking for would be for example, the messages and browser from the droid 1.

Root and rom your phone to any vanilla or aosp rom and you'll be set. Plenty from which to choose in this forum.
