Root HTC noob, help please!

Hello and thankyou to anyone who takes the time to read my question and reply. I have just upgraded from the VM optimus v to the VM Evo v and the rooting/flashing process seems a little more complicated then I remember. I have been reading numerous threads, however I always seem to wind up with 20 windows open and mass confusion. I followed a root guide earlier by leslieann and was successful in completing the process (I stopped at just root-installing superuser patch). However I am now trying to figure out all this s-off stuff. My phone is hboot-1.57 and s-on. TWRP recovery. Do I need to do anything to flash a custom ROM? Thanks!

Download Quick Boot from Google Play. Thats what I do instead of doing the s-off thing. Use it to go to recovery then when there flash a rom if you want to.

Thanks I will try this. Can recoveries be interchanged? For example, can I change from twrp to 4ext without doing the whole process again?

Yep. There may be another method to do this as well, but if you boot into the bootloader and open a command prompt all you have to type is
Code:
Fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img

Just make sure that the recovery.img is in the same folder as fastboot.exe is on your computer. There may be a way to flash the recovery through an app on your phone as well. But this isn't too hard, and it let's you know how to do it in case you ever run into trouble down the road.

Backups you made with the old recovery may not be compatible with the new recovery.

Thanks again for the quick replies. Thanks David for the quickboot tip. To agent, I purchased 4ext recovery from Play and it does the installation for you. Thanks!
