So. The background to this issue is very complicated. Basically, I'm trying to help out a Chinese exchange student at my school (in the US) use his HTC One M8 on AT&T. I actually made this account specifically for this issue, so please excuse my newness to the community.
Here's the background:
He bought the phone online, in China, from Sprint in the US. He uses it in China on China Mobile, with no problem at all. I'm pretty sure he bought the phone without a service agreement (since it's a Sprint phone for use in China) so I'm pretty sure his sim is unlocked.
Here in the US, the phone automatically roams on AT&T when his China Mobile sim is inserted. It doesn't appear to be picking up Verizon service (in a confirmed Verizon service area) at all, in any network mode (GSM/UMTS, CDMA, or Global). The manual network selection displays AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile as options.
He has an AT&T sim card, and he wants to use the AT&T sim so he can text his new American friends. Whenever he puts the sim in though, the phone can't find any networks. I tried putting my Verizon sim in the phone, and it didn't work either. The phone simply wouldn't find any networks in any of the three network modes. There was no prompt to enter a sim unlock code or anything. It simply doesn't work.
I would like to add that I don't know the exact model number of the phone. It's not the Harmon Kardon edition, so I'm assuming it's just a plain old Sprint HTC One M8. However, to use his phone in Chinese, he installed a custom ROM that, at the same time, enables the Harmon Kardon software features. The phone displays 831c (the same model as Harmon Kardon) as the model number in the settings app, although I believe that is just a result of the custom ROM, and not the actual model of the phone.
All I am trying to get the phone to do is to pick up the AT&T network when the AT&T sim is inserted. It picks up the AT&T network just fine with the China Mobile sim inserted, so it's not a hardware issue. Thoughts, anyone? Anything you can add will help. I'm stuck and so is my friend. Thanks so much!
