HTC One M8 Review Thread

The best I can find is that:
The M8(q) looks like a version for the regions near India
The M8(x) looks like a version for the regions near "Asia" (Taiwan, Indionesia, Austrailia, New Zealand, etc.)

They should be the same phone. There could be slight differences in the operating frequencies (like the wifi antenna or 4G) and which carriers it may work with, on board storage capacity (16GB vs. 32GB ROM), chassis color, software versions, bootloaders, etc.

Which country are you in Big__Daddy? Or where did you purchase the phones from?

Having had the M8 with Verizon for about a month now, I find 2 things irritating, one of which may lead me to try and get rid of this phone: (1) setting notifications and (2) phone call volume.

(1) I'm fed up with selecting a notification ring tone for one thing, my text messages, for example, and having this notification then become the default notification for everything else. If I try to then change the notification ring tone for other things back to whatever it was, this then changes the notification ring tone for my text messages. Why the hell is it so impossible to set different notification ring tones for different things?

(2) From the first day I got this phone, well before rooting it, I noticed the volume for phone calls was very low, to the point where I simply couldn't hear much of what the other party was saying. I'd turn up the volume in every way I could think, but that didn't matter. It still wasn't that loud. This problem still existed after I rooted the M8 as well, so I don't know what the cause and answer might be.

The fact that I have excellent hearing with no audio perception problems makes this even more frustrating.

Is the volume problem hand held?

I was surprised to find that the speaker up top is to the far left, when you're facing the phone.

I couldn't hear anyone (seriously, less than a whisper) until I made the adjustment to place my ear canal over that spot, then, no problem, very loud and clear.

If wired headphones, maybe an impedance mismatch - mine are too loud until turned way down.

As for notifications, maybe it's a Sense thing? I set a separate one with Textra (better sms app imo) and it's isolated from changing the default.

Short Review of HTC One (M8) after a month usage

Pros
  • Great design with solid material and feel.
  • Extremely smooth performance in custom skin Android. This M8 is the most smoother android phone I ever had after Nexus series and Moto X.
  • Great camera lens, the Ultrapixel is not gimmick after you know and familiar with it. Great dynamic range capture. Solid output especially the manual mode is a big welcome! It done spectacular output result.
  • Front 5MP camera is real awesome for Selfie.
  • Awesome loud speaker! the dual stereo speaker is gonna boom! you. Yeah!
  • Solid SLCD3, the color vividness, balances is just speechless! This is a great solid LCD, I don't see any light bleeding at all. I more prefer this than AMOLED now.
Cons
  • 4MP is really something not enough in certain situation. Full view the photo no issue but not for zooming.
  • As internet speculation, the lens cover probably is plastic or maybe a not hard enough glass, it do scratch, mine got a tinny line already during clean up the lens. This part is not acceptable.
  • 5" is still not big enough, I still prefer 5.5" and above.
Attached here the benefits of having Manual Mode. Below photo is taken at dark environment where probably only 10% light source.

Auto Mode - Noise everywhere with greenish on dark area.

Manual Mode - Clear and Sharp

Yes, it's the in-call volume when one uses the handset.

If it's not that positioning thing I mentioned, maybe get yours checked out. Could be borked, could have shipped that way.

I promise mine is more than loud and clear. Held up, others can hear what's being said if I max the volume. (And just regular, not on speakers.)

I bet yours needs the old swapperoo for a good one.

Illogical to me how quiet it is if I hold it to my ear wrong, but, that's how mine is. Weird.

I had a similar issue early on until I changed my ear position on the phone, now it's normal for me to hold it that way.

I have been very disappointed in this phone. We have been with Verizon for over ten years. I had Motorola Droid phones but they don't make them any more so I went to the HTC . I am now stuck with it till 2/16 with no way out. Tech support has not been able to help with some features. Trying to find some features takes a lot of digging, it is not intuitive to me or to several tech support folks. I would not recommend this phone to anyone, not even someone I don't like!

Lord Vader
I am glad your experience has been positive. Sometimes I think it has to do with ones fluency with smart phones - mine is low as you can tell

What settings in Manual mode do you have?

Hello guys, got my M8 for a couple of days and I'm very impressed, the front-facing speakers are very useful for games and movies.

You could sell on swappa then just buy a new phone?
