Help HTC One M8 Stuck in host Mode won't charge

Bobbyg714

Newbie
Hi I have had the phone since first released from Verizon and never had an issue. Tonight I went to charge and I keep getting message "Phone is in Host Mode and cannot charge". I am not rooted and have never seen this. Tried searching forums but didn't see thread. The battery will not charge when I plug in to the wall or PC. I tried rebooting and no luck. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you

This is for the HTC ONE M7, but might work for the M8. Give it a try...

Thanks that didn't do it. It is related to the HTC Car Mode app. It seems like it takes over phone. I get docking mode and Host mode unable to charge randomly. THe Car app keeps popping up. What a mess, Thanks HTC great App.

Try clearing cache and data on the app, then force close it. If it still happens, try disabling the app completely. I can't imagine that the car mode app would be needed for any other functionality of the phone. But if it is and other things stop working correctly, you can always turn it back on.

Suggest trying to contact HTC Customer Support directly. They have a vested interest in understanding and resolving this issue since it also could affect others.

Yes that would be my next step. Tried a few other things like disabling dock mode etc. THe car app keeps popping up and I can't charge my phone. I get the docking message or "you are in Host mode and cannot charge" The Car app must have been recently auto updtaed or installed as it is nothing I downloaded or use and it cannot be removed. Just started yesterday.

If you have not already, you will want to ensure that you are using the exact original USB charge cable and wall AC adapter that shipped with the phone. They were designed for the device (1.5A) and should be the one that you use. As a test, using said charger, charge directly from the wall on a standard wall socket, with nothing else plugged into the outlet besides the phone. If one outlet gives you trouble try a different outlet in a different location with a different circuit or entirely different power source. You can eliminate a bevy of variables in this case.

Make sure fast boot is disabled and power down the phone completely. Wait for it to be off for a short bit then plug it in. Will it charge?

Certain USB cables (especially car chargers or dock cables) have an extra pin in the connector. HTC has designed the phone to detect when this pin is present in the connector and automatically put the phone into Dock or Car mode.

Dock Mode should be in Settings -> Display & Gestures -> Daydream -> set it to Off

Within 'Car' scroll down and select settings (this is somewhat 'hidden' or not immediately apparent). Turn off Auto Launch ("start app when my phone connects to my car dock") Auto Play, Auto Connect, and Auto notifications. Give 'Car' no rights to automatically start up and do its own thing without your permission. Once done press 'Exit' in 'Car'.

In the worst case scenario, there could possibly be a short happening, kicking the phone into car mode. Any water or extreme humidity exposure recently?

If this doesn't get to the root of the problem we can try a few other things.

Thank you for the reply. I was able to get it to charge by turning it all the way off overnight and plugging into the wall. This is not ideal as I am in need of being capable of getting contacted by work at off hours.

I went ahead and made all the changes above as instructed. DayDream mode was not set up but was turned on. I was able to plug in now and it is charging with phone on and no pop up of car app or dock mode so far, fingers crossed as it seems to happen sporadically. I will check back in later with an update. Thank you so much for the reply hoping this did it.

So far so good been about 11 hours and the car app hasn't hijacked my phone all day. This is the longest it has been in two days. You may have gotten this resolved. Thank you so much!

Ok after a long absence the issue is back. and now worse the car mode is hi jacking my phone again. It started last night. I went back and followed your instructions again but the settings were already done. Do you have any other suggestions? I am ready to throw this phone against the wall....... Thank you

Did the re-emergence of the take over happen after any certain or specific behavior?
Such as: Using a car charger, Charging at work using a non standard cable or wall charger, Bluetooth Sync(with vehicle?), utilizing a particular application out of the ordinary, Connecting to a computer, syncing data with Google Servers, full moon, etc. ???
Have you used Maps for GPS driven directions? Wouldn't surprise me if Verizon coded the phone to ASSume you are driving in a car and try to force you to use 'Car'.

Do you depend heavily upon any 3rd party applications (for important business email retrieval/text messaging/contacts) I was going to suggest running your phone in Safe Mode for a day or two to see if it happens on a more stock running environment with NO extra applications running.
It is a bit extreme, but better than a factory restore.

Hi! Got the exact same problem with my M8.
I tried to clean the usb port and it seemed to work... for a day.
Then I tried to charge it and it stopped at 87% during the night without touching it...

After a reboot, it charges again...

I'm rooted and using a Venom rom, with a European M8

Nothing out of ordinary. I always use charger that came with the phone. It just keeps goig into dock mode and the "POS Car app takes over" I have even disabled docking mode but it doesn't matter. The weird part is that it will stop for a while and then start again. I knwo I have the issue as soon as I see the car screen come on on not my normal home screen. I do need email etc for work. It is jus so frustrating this was my favorite phone and now I am starting to lothe it. Any other suggestions. I was wondering if may there is a port issue that is triggering it. I still don't get how car mode takes over when I have all setting to "don't" When it gets into dock mode it also keeps turning on my screen and leaving it on, it is just a mess.

Thanks.

When it happens do you have the Car app just take over also?

Hi All,
I had this exact thing happen to me while I was on vacation in Hawaii.
My M8 would be going into the Car App (I had no freakin idea what it was) at seemingly random times. Also I got the alert that it was in USB host mode and not charging as well.

I only had the phone for a few months, so I decided to do a factory restore since none of the reboot sequences was helping.

Unfortunately it was still doing it. :(

Then as it did it one time with the charger plugged in, I happened to jiggle the charger on the phone and it exited the car app. Aha! I suspected that I got some dust or something in the port causing some short or connection where the phone thinks you've got it on the car dock (I found that you can buy this thing from HTC).

So I started to look carefully at the plug, stopped using that cable (as I had another aftermarket one with me). I blew on the port to see if there might be some particles trapped in there, also stripped a q-tip to see if I can get there to clean anything. So avoiding that cable that I was using and trying to keep the port clean, it stopped happening!

After getting home I took an air duster and carefully blew out the port. So far so good for more than a week now.

Anyone have any thoughts about this theory? or can confirm that's what might be causing this particular issue?

That is the exact behavior I was experiencing. On 9/16 Verizon pushed out an update to my phone and it has been fine since. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm having the same issue, but I did spill a little bit of water on the bottom speaker. I wiped it off quickly and thought nothing of it. A few hours later mine started having this bizarre behavior and I removed my Speck case and found some water trapped behind the back of the phone and the case. I've tried setting it in front of a fan to dry and left it in a bowl of rice last night to draw any water out. Any suggestions?

Hi

I started having the same problem a few days ago myself. After looking at this thread and another I followed all the suggestions to no avail. unfortunately my phone battery completely died due to no charger working on my HTC one M8.

I initially used a safety pin to clear out the usb port and the charger started to work for that use. Later I tried to recharge the phone and the same issue arose with the car app switching itself on again and again. This is the point that my battery died completely. I read on another forum to use a computer duster or air compressor which I didn't have at hand so I decided instead of blowing the dust out of the usb port let me try using a vacuum cleaner to suck it out instead.

YES!! it has worked for NOW. I'm charging the phone whilst it's powered off hopefully the issue is resolved.

My brother has an HTC droid DNA. His headphone jack stopped working. He took a toothpick and needle and pulled out a surprising amount of pocket lint out of the hole. One good reason to NOT carry it in a pocket.

yea i carry mine in a pur... i mean satchel

Glad to hear it worked for you. I tried the compressed air to no avail. It's on it's way back to Verizon and I have a CLNR for now. Hopefully they don't charge me for water damage. If the liquid damage indicator (LDI) is in the same spot posted on the T-Mobile website (by the camera and LED light) it did not turn pink/purple. Fingers crossed.

Hi, I have this very same issue with my HTC One M8. PyroSporker you asked here if the phone was recently exposed to extreme humidity or water and I think this is my case. Last weekend I had my phone in my poket and it was raining very hard but I did not think that it would affect the phone, my pants were all wet though. Since then - saturday - the phone is going randomly into car mode and sometimes refuses to charge. What would be your advice in this case?

If you have not figured out how to fix the problem. Just get a new Charger. Mine did this Today, And I switched my Charger to my M8 to my old Galaxy S III and it is working fine.

I have been having the same problems with my HTC one - battery won't charge, USB host mode, docking, phone appears to be charging when NOT plugged in, speaker phone goes off by itself and phone randomly goes into car mode. I am on my 4th phone with 5th on the way! Obviously HTC is ignoring these problems because they are rampant and on different models! Don't pay them to "fix" your phone because they obviously don't know what they are doing! Complain LOUDLY! I have been able to get mine to function but problems continue to recur. Unfortunately it takes persistence and what works one time my not work the next. Sometimes I am able to restart the phone. Other times I shut phone off and connect to charger and it will charge while off. Or try pushing power button while holding down both volume buttons for 2 minutes. Then restart. You can do this even when battery is dead. Phone will vibrate and go to HTC screen then off repeatedly. I have tried HTC support which has been no help. Beware that they will try to blame you for the problem! I've been blamed for using wrong charger (the HTC charger died within 6 weeks!), damaging the phone, installing a corrupted app, "this never happens to the same person multiple times" (excuse me! Read the forums-I'm not alone!), etc! We bought 3 of the same model on the same day - only mine has problems. I contend it's because they keep sending me "certified refurbished" phones! Are they really fixing the problems when they won't acknowledge that the problem is theirs??!! Don't pay HTC anything! Go to your provider - verizon has replaced each phone without any charges.
