Help HTC One M9 not loading data over 3G

Disclaimer: I have sprint, so I know I can only expect so much, though service is generally just fine in Boston. However, before I got this phone, I had an iphone 4s (not by choice, it was the only smartphone I could afford at the time, because it was free), and before that I had an HTC Evo Shift. My two previous phones loaded websites, Google maps, Spotify, everything just fine over 3G (despite the Evo Shift having 4G capabilities).

For some reason, the M9 will only load these over 4G and WiFi, which I don't always have. It's like it thinks that because 4G is superior, I shouldn't even want to load anything over 3G. (I know, it doesn't actually have conscious thoughts, but it's been really getting on my nerves.) As far as this thing is concerned, if it's only connected to 3G, it's not connected at all. Spotify and Maps tell me I'm offline, and chrome, if it does anything besides spin its wheel, says the same.

Has anyone else had this issue? Anyone know what might be wrong? I haven't had time to bring it into the store since I got it a little over a month ago, but that's my next step whenever I can get a day off.

I did notice when we were setting it up in the store, it didn't recognize that it had a sim card in it until we took it out and put it back in. I also can't save contacts to the sim card. I figure the two are probably related somehow, but I'm not exactly a technological genius. I just know enough to get by most of the time.

I have an M8, so this may or may not be laid out the same.

Main settings, tap on Mobile Data (not the switch), on that settings page - Network mode - CDMA (only) = 3G.

While you're there, Automatic Connection, uncheck the Sprint Connections Optimizer. It's just a bad dog ok.

You can't get a 3G/4G widget anymore due to basic Android security changes.

You can get faster access to the CDMA/LTE settings with this app, I like it a lot.

Check out "Data Settings"

Btw - Evo Shift - great phone! :)

I'd turned off connections optimizer ages ago because it kept turning on WiFi when I wasn't around any WiFi networks.

I just tried switching the network type and it seems to have worked! Does this mean I have to do that every time 4G isn't available? That's kind of annoying, though certainly less annoying than not having Google maps in weird parts of Boston.
I downloaded the app anyway so if this doesn't end up working in the long term i'll give that a try.

Thank you!!

And yes, if I wasn't getting it replaced every two months by the end of it due to the poorly protected wire tape between the screen and the phone, I would still be using that hand-me-down Evo Shift. I still hate touch screen keyboards with a fiery passion.

If you're in an area with just 3G, the CDMA/LTE setting is fine.

The problem comes when you can pick up a hint of a poor LTE signal when a better CDMA signal is available - it goes for the 4G every time.

It depends on the area - where I am, I have two areas where I have to switch to 3G by hand, otherwise the auto switch is just fine.

I wish vzw allowed you to set cdma only in note 3. On my way home I pass through a weak zone and rather than grabbing 3G the phone struggles to keep LTE. This means no signal at all.

The LTE/CDMA is an auto - if there's no LTE, it'll switch to CDMA. The problem comes when LTE is weaker (and less useful) than an available CDMA connection. It switches based on signal presence, not signal quality. The actual auto setting doesn't seem to bring anything to the table.
