Help HTC Sensation; A DIFFERENT Wi-Fi Problem

zipzooka

Lurker
Hi there.

I just got a new HTC Sensation yesterday on a Telstra plan (Australian user) and it was golden for the first few hours. Everything worked fine, no lag, Market was downloading things fine but then something happened.

The phone will happily connect to my Wi-Fi at home, says it's connected, I can even ping the phone from my PC but I can NOT access the internet at all through Wi-Fi now. No Facebook, no GMail, no Market, nothing. My only choice is to use the data plan included in the phone, and I wanted to avoid having to do that while I was at home.

I was just wondering, has anybody heard of this problem? And, if not, is there a way to download applications and games etc. from the Android Market and not use the handset?

Thanks in advance, guys. This is my first Android phone and I'm extremely impressed so far, just this one niggling little problem that's marring the experience.

It sounds like the phone is not picking up the default gateway. Is your network using DHCP or are you manually assigning addresses? Its that, or the security key is incorrect on the phone, where it will have the wifi "bars" in the notification bar, but its not truly connected (i.e. its talking to the router, but the router won't let it have full access).

My router (Billion 7300GRA) is using DHCP if memory serves correctly. Everything is auto-assigned to my PS3 and the laptop that I have in the house connected to Wi-Fi.

I'm pretty sure that I'm using the correct key, but I'll assign a new key through the router and try that.

Edit: Still no luck after trying a different key.

Edit part deux: I forgot to mention, I can't even log into my router from my phone (something I was able to do with my HD2) by going to 192.168.blah.blah/index.asp. Can't find it at all, and I know it's the right address.

do you have MAC address filtering on your router? If so, you will need to permit your phone's MAC address on the router and maybe restart the router.

No MAC address filtering as far as I can see. What I don't understand is, it was working fine but then stopped working without any changes on the router/PC side of things, and I hadn't changed any settings on the phone prior to my realisation that it was no longer working.

Thanks for the help guys, hopefully I find the answer soon.

Edit: Have also tried setting the phone up so it's in a DMZ when it connects to my router, still to no avail.

Reset your router. It sounds like a stupid "troubleshooting" type answer, but I have this problem sometimes. Not on a Sensation though. Just give it a try. Can't hurt.

Tried resetting my router to factory settings then rebooting it, then updated it with my original settings and still no luck. Guess I'll never get Wi-Fi to work on my phone. :(

I have got the same problem, what i do is i turn off my wifi and then turn it on .. after that goto wifi settings, click on the connection then click forget and type the password again .. after all this it works perfectly ..

Have you contacted your phone supplier? All this advice re resetting routers etc is BS the problem is obviously with the phone.

I was thinking of getting this phone but a quick scan of Google shows lots of wi fi issues with this phone, as well as Bluetooth audio issues so I will look elsewhere as it makes my current htc desire a better bet. A shame as I would like to stick with HTC for my next phone

I have same problem like zipzooka.
One week ago, I bought HTC Sensation. Everything worked fine, I was downloading apps fine, but then something happened.

I could connect to my private WiFi, but I haven't access to Internet.

I already tried everything what you wrote and even more.
I still have old mobile phone Sony Ericsson Xperia 8, which can connect to my private WiFi without any problem.

If you have some more idea, I would be very happy :)

No solutions yet, mate. Looks like it might be a problem with the phone. Hopefully it's software and not hardware that's the issue, because my nearest Telstra shop is like 40km away. :/

When connected to your router, under the wi-fi "Advanced" settings, is there an IP address under the "Gateway" setting?

Also, have you tried running the router "without" any wireless security, and then trying to access the internet with the phone?

Well, I've just figured out the problem, and suffice to say, I feel like a dumbass.

I had my PS3 connected to my wireless awhile ago and had a static IP address assigned to it. The details were still in my router for the PS3 and had the wrong MAC address assigned to it. Changed the MAC address and voila! Emails, Market, everything works again.

I didn't notice it because finding the actual screen to assign a static IP via MAC address in my router is fairly well disguised.

Thanks for the help everyone. :)
