Help HTC Sense crash after Android update

I received an invitation to download and install an Android update, which I did. It seemed to work initially - it showed me a tutorial on some new features. However it soon displayed a message:
Sorry. The application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. FORCE CLOSE.
Clicking the "force close" button just sends it in a loop so that the message reappears after about 3 seconds. I can drag down the notification area while it's going through its loop and thereby reply to mail or messages and I can answer calls in time but can't do anything else; I can't get to the Home screen for example, or Settings. Any idea how I can break out of this?

I have tried turning off and on again, removing the battery after switching off and removing the battery while the phone is on - nothing works). A factory reset will lose my contacts, calendar, photos, etc.

I can connect with the USB cable and view the folders but this seems to be just the 2Gb microSD card (I'm looking using Windows Explorer). Can anyone point me to a procedure for backing up and restoring what I can? I'm hoping I can save my data this way even if I have to reload my apps.

With a factory reset you will lose whats on your phone, BUT you will not lose what's on google/facebook/other cloud stuff, or the the SIM or the SD card (excepts apps).

So all your gmail contacts are safe, all your SIM contacts are safe, Your photos and music are safe. The Apps you have paid for are still paid for.

You lose all phone memory contacts, all your surfing history, all your call and text history, all your customisation of the appearance and settings of the phone and the installation of your apps.

So after a factory reset it looks like a new phone except it already has your pictures and music on it. You have to put in your gmail address again, your facebook and twitter and flickr etc. again, your other email/exchage details again, your wireless key again, and you need to install all your apps again (but any you shouldn't be charged again for any that you paid for).

I had a dodgy phone at first which HTC have now replaced, so I have been though it a few times.

So you might lose a few contacts depending where they are saved on the phone but you will propbably find that you only lose the ones that you bluetoothed over from your old phone when you got this one. So if you've still got the old phone you could blue tooth them over again and then this time back them up on your SD or on Gmail (see my hint or tip).

When you've got it working you might want to back up the SD on a computer and get a couple of apps to back up bookmarks, settings, etc. on the SD.

Thanks James,
I was able to answer a call to my mobile and from there get to my contacts; then I made sure all were copied to the SIM so they wouldn't be lost. I couldn't save anything else.
I did a factory reset, reloaded my apps, etc., installed PC Sync and set up a Google calendar on my PC and synced that. The Android 2.2 upgrade appears to work well.
What backup app would you recommend?
Nick

Thanks for advice I have the same problem. I am unable to do a search as the phone wont let me do anything just keeps looping the same message. I have been in touch with Virgin Mobile who are sending me a new phone - if it happens again will try both options - Hopefully wont have to :)

I had the same issue today after upgrading to 2.3.4. HTC Sense crashing after upgrade. It keeps re-trying to launch, but gives me the Force Close option. After reading this thread I got some ideas.
Search did not work for me. Since HTC Sense couldn't load, the search only worked with Google and web, but not native phone menus or apps.
Here's a solution if everything else failed:

Get Advanced Task Killer. IF you do not have advance task killer then try the search by holding the loupe button while HTC Sense is doing it's retrying to launch. Do a voice search or type in Advanced Task Killer, or android market or anything that will give you the option to go to the android market (it should say Internet or Market). If you don't have Advanced Task Killer download it and launch it.
In Advanced Task killer press Menu and select Service. This will get you to the Applications Manager.
Now go to All, and find HTC Sense.
Now you can clear the data! WOOHOO! Avoided a factory reset and losing all my contacts.
