Help HTC Sense UI Browser vs Stock Android Browser. Different Pinch-To-Zoom Behavior.

Taking time away from doing what?

From using the browser

I don't want my browser to lag when I pinch-to-zoom that sucks. Especially since stock Android had a perfectly good browser that they didn't need to change.

The stock Android browser also fits the text to view. You tell it to by double-tapping. The problem with Evo's browser is it forces pinch-to-zoom to autofit the text. On a stock Android browser, you would pinch-to-zoom, and if you find you wanted the text autofit, you just double-tap and it doesnt' change the zoom-level, only reformats the layout.

Spiffy. I generally stopped pinching to zoom after the novelty of it being 'neat' wore off. I just double tap now anyway because it makes the text just the right size for reading and auto-formats. I can see how it would be annoying if you like to pinch zoom a lot.

Mine doesn't lag at all when I pinch, matter of a fact it re-structures the page before I can even blink. I know some of you love to bitch about little un-important things, but look I have a fix for you, you'll love this one:

Go back return your Evo and stick with your Droid, stop wasting the site's bandwidth with your pointless rants. If you want a phone to have and do everything the way YOU like it I suggest getting an engineering degree and you can make one yourself.

I'm sorry but this site is full of I don't like this or that wah wah... If you don't like it return it and stop crying.

Pinch to zoom works just fine. Must be your phone.

Wow, you really got the wrong impression of me. I suggest you take a look at some of my other posts. I'm sure you'll agree that I'm certainly a contributing member of this forum. On the other hand, do you really think your post here is contributing to the forum in any way? Just because you don't sense a problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist for other people.

I think I should clarify this thread: If you've never used a phone with a stock Android browser before, you will most likely not see Evo's pinch-to-zoom auto-fit behavior as an issue. And you will believe very strongly that this is a feature. It's nice that you guys are coming out and letting us know how you feel, but ignorance is bliss. You guys have never used a browser that does auto-fit correctly, so you think i'm just crying about nothing. What I would like is a browser on the Evo that behaves like a stock Android browser. And I think it's possible if someone was able to just port over the Android 2.1 Browser.apk file to the Evo. But this thread has turned into an argument on whether people feel that this is an issue, so that may be already too late.

I think what YOU don't understand is if you don't like how the phone handles it, return the phone and buy one that meets YOUR specifications.

We are tired of hearing people just whine about what they don't like about the phone. Again, don't like it return it. Stop trying to tell the rest of us we should care.

I'm just trying to look for a solution! I'm not whining about it, just trying to respond to everyone who says this problem doesn't exist.

Why can't we say what we don't like about the phone? If you're offended by anything bad someone says about the phone, then you're no more than a fanboy.

I have NO issues when someone posts any issue and is seeking constructive input.

I have MAJOR issues with anyone beating a dead horse and insisting the rest of us care about something no one else has an issue with.

Again, don't like it, return it and get a phone you do like.

So when you tell me there is no issue, I should just say "oh you're right. I guess I'll close this thread now"? What a load of bull. There are people on this thread who've also noticed the issue (1,2,3,4), and I'd like to get it fixed. Maybe you could help the thread better if you tell us if you have ever used a device with stock Android before, and if you have, tell us if you've noticed this difference in behavior in pinch-to-zoom. Otherwise you're bitching and whining just as much as anyone else.

Whatever. I don't like stock Android. Why I bought HTC. I am happy how the Evo browser handles things. As most people who responded in your thread said. But YOU keep insisting we care.

Sad really. But I am done with this. Sorry you don't like the phone. Just accept it as the way it is or go buy a stock Android phone. HTC doesn't make any.

Haha of course you've never used stock Android before! If you have, we wouldn't be in this argument. Now you keep saying if I don't like it I should get another phone... There's another option. I can go online, and see if other people have the same issue, and then search for a fix. It's not going very smoothly right now, but I'm sure SOMEONE has felt the same way I do about the browser, and have figured out how to get the stock Android browser back.

I completely agree with pingpongboss. I love everything about the EVO, but really dislike the text wrapping in the browser. I would love to see a solution to this. Also, buying a new phone is ridiculous, not helpful, and not a solution.

I noticed what OP was saying since I got the phone. It's annoying. I like how iPhone does the pinch and zoom. The page doesn't move around after zooming.

I just tested the Dolphin HD browser and it doesnt move around after pinching to zoom. It behaves just like you demonstrated with the stock android browser

Thanks guys! I'm glad I'm not the only one wishing it could be better. I tried out Bugless Beast v0.4, since it says that it provides the AOSP (stock) browser. But it still had the same behavior :(

Hmm that's strange I just checked again and it does. Did you uncheck More->Settings->System Settings->Auto-fit pages? That would prevent double-tap from forcing auto-fit, and you wouldn't be able to auto-fit when you wanted to.

I disagree. With the stock Android browser, you use pinch-to-zoom to get to the correct zoom level, and then if you want to restructure the layout to fit the text, you just double-tap. The final double-tap doesn't change the zoom level. However, with the HTC Sense UI browser, you don't have the option of a pinch-to-zoom that retains the layout. For example, if you wanted to zoom into this bold word, you would pinch to zoom, but when you let go, the layout restructuring might move it to another part of the page. This happens to me a lot when I'm hunting for small links.

Oh, I see... didn't realize that we were actually missing functionality. In that case, I'm displeased, though it doesn't bother me a whole hell of a lot, in practice.

it was still checked. i tested it on ebay.com, but when i went to pocketnow it auto-fitted the page. strange that it didn't on ebay

Your snarky note notwithstanding, you are crying about nothing. Or rather about a feature working as it is intended. You may not like it, but calling people who do like it ignorant is itself ignorant.

The "ignorance is bliss" comment was just a saying. I was trying to say that if you have never used the stock Android's browser before, you won't see what I'm talking about. I apologize if you were offended.

Give up. He is incapeable of ever getting it. Better to just ignore his posts.

Hey man I don't know why you hate me so much :( but let's at least try to keep the posts relevant to the subject.

For everyone that agrees that the Evo's browser has a bad pinch-to-zoom implementation, check out the Browser in the Hero_Froyo custom ROM.
