I don't have a phone that requires HTC Sync, but have you tried a different version of sync?

Out of curiosity, is Sync something you need installed?

HTC Sync came with the phone as an easier way of syncing data. If there is another way, that is simple and works, then I'm all ears.

This won't solve your problem but I'm having the same issue with my Wildfire S.

Hope anyone can solve it, I didn't think there was enough reason to start a new topic about this.

I just got a HTC Desire Z and HTC Sync freezes my computer. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. This is so frustrating. I have re-installed the latest HTC Sync software, but inevitably, it freezes my computer. I have to do a hard reboot to restart.

I have had numerous issues with my HTC Desire Z device. My plan was to use it for work but I now recommend to all to be very weary of this device. The device is great, as long as you don't plan to connect it to your computer. However, I travel to work by train and tethering is extremely important to me.

Here are my warnings / issues:

HTC Sync does not work properly - it crashes (actually freezes) my computer. Many others have complained about this. My company does not want me to post my contact and meeting information on Google, so the Google fix that some have suggested is not an option for me.

Tethering the device created huge issues when the signal was lost (as would happen when one commutes by train). First off, every time I lost my signal (I actually reproduced this using aluminum foil to block a signal to the phone) none of my email sent from Outlook would send, nor could I send any emails from the HTC until I reset my email account on the HTC. Second, after some use, I could no longer connect my computer to WiFi - the HTC device / software did something to my WiFi driver / settings. After uninstalling all HTC software and drivers and re-installing my wireless drivers I was able to get my computer back to normal.

Fortunately, my company has a huge account with our service provider and I was able to trade in my device for an iPhone4. While I am definitely not an Apple fan (used to have a Mac but switched back to Windows 7 because no sophisticated software works properly on a Mac) and the HTC Desire is a nicer phone to use, I've had no problems with the iPhone - syncing works very well (almost seamlessly), tethering works with no problems and I've had no issues with tethering messing up my wireless.

So, bottom line, if you are a power user be very wary of HTC.
