Help HTC sync - questions.

Ok, I'll admit it. I haven't used it yet.

This is a long story, but cutting to the chase, I can't get it to work.

Ok:
XP SP2
HTC Sync 2.0.28 - came with phone.
Phone Desire 2.1 update 1

Also, what has started to happen is every time I plug the phone in, I get a messge telling me that USB DEBUGGING is enabled. It always was as far as I know. More on that in a moment.

Ok, reading the instructions, I run HTC Sync on the PC.
I plug the phone in and select HTC Sync and all SHOULD be good.

It isn't.

The phone sits there trying to find the computer. Eventually it says it can't. The manual/instructions say to unplug and re-plug it.... And if that doesn't work.....????

Now, maybe this is why I am getting the message about USB DEBUGGING, but what I did once, by mistake.... While trying anything.

USB DEBUGGING OFF.
Plug in phone.
Select INTERNET SHARING.
Then I got to setttings/what ever and turn on USB DEBUGGING.

Suddenly, the computer says: Found new device, and wants the DRIVERS.
I click/select the "use default location" to which it says it can't find the drivers. It then asks me to insert the CD.

Yeah, right.

So WHAT drivers is it wanting?

Where do I get them?

Anyway, stopping that effort, I plug in the phone to the USB port, select HYC sync and still get nothing.

Tried another USB port: Same thing.

But now, every time I plug in the phone, it gives me the SMS message and it tells me that USB DEBUGGING IS ACTIVE.

How do I stop that - just as a bye.

More to the point: How do I get HTC Sync to work?
Oh, I do NOT have outlookg installed.

I want to make a backup of my contacts etc.

I am wanting to update to 2.2.
