HTC Sync - Unable to create device manager instance

HTC Sync (with cable to Outlook on my desktop) worked fine for a few weeks after I got the Evo and doesn't work now. Trying to start it brings up an error message "Unable to create device manager instance".

I've searched the web and forums and have tried every suggestion, none of which work.

Has anyone here had this problem and actually solved it?

HTC Sync is a piece of smoking dung.

I haev never gotten it to work. Now Droid Explorer (still, a work in progress), but much better, I have a thread in their forums that shows how to install and use it:

Unless I missed something, Droid Explorer doesn't seem to be the thing to put my Outlook Calendar and Contacts on my Evo.....

It does have a contacts add-on, it's just not finished yet. However, it does show you your device on your desktop as well as a bunch of other functionality.
