I spent hours with HTC Tech Support and spoke with 4 different Reps. I followed all instructions I could find including disabling all firewall and antivirus programs.
My laptop PC is running Windows 7 64-bit and I am trying to sync with Outlook 2010 (I found out later that HTC Sync does not support this version of Outlook).
Call #1: Had me turn off USB debugging, remove battery, replace battery, try different USB ports.
Then on the PC, had me uninstall, reinstall HTC Sync software. He then ended the conversation telling me it's probably something on my computer and to call back if I still can't sync.
He also told me to check out the forums on the HTC web site (which I did before even calling) but all similar threads were either unanswered nor had the right answer. Still did not recognize my device.
Call #2: This one was very brief. Rep told me I did everything right except I was supposed to install HTC Sync software while my Inspire 4G was connected to the PC and ended the call so that I could try that.
Call #3: Above did not work so this rep told me to remove battery while phone was connected. He also told me that maybe with Outlook 2010 64-bit installed might be giving HTC Sync conflicts.
I told him I had another PC with Windows 7 32-bit and Outlook 2007 installed. He told me to sync with that PC and if it still doesn't work to call back.
Call #4: So far 2 different branded PCs, running Windows 7 32 and 64 bit, two different versions of Outlook did not work for me.
This was my last call. Still on my older PC with the 32 bit Windows 7 and Outlook 2007, Rep had me change cables, reset my phone to factory presets. Gave me a different URL to download HTC Sync package. Redownloaded the software and replaced the other one I downloaded (same file name). Uninstalled HTC Sync again.
Reinstalled and was told to plug the phone in as soon as the pop up message telling me to turn off firewalls (before the install started copying files to the computer). This did not work lol.
In fact, while the phone is plugged in, HTC Sync would not load on my PC. As soon as I unplug it, HTC Sync loads.
The Rep told me that they have done everything they could and suggested going to AT&T and swapping it out with another Inspire 4G.
End Result: I downloaded a trial of CompanionLink and DejaOffice and synced. I am not a sales rep for CL. All I can say is it did sync to Outlook 2010. I now have my contacts, tasks, notes, calendar on my Inspire and I am happy.
I am a bit reluctant of CL because of a review I read in the market that it crashed after a couple of weeks and deleted data. Not sure if that is true or not so we shall see. I also don't like the look of the calendar but it's better than not having my schedules available at all.
I hope this helped someone out there. HTC tech support for the most part was quite friendly and they did everything they could.
I told the last rep that there was a comment in a PC Mag review that this HTC Sync version does not support Inspire 4G and the rep told me that this article was not true. From my experience, I believe the article:
HTC Inspire 4G (AT&T) Review & Rating | PCMag.com
"While the phone has a mode to sync locally with Outlook using HTC's free HTC Sync software, the current version of the software doesn't support this phone. "
