HTC Vivid

And as far as rooting, I dont think its a dealbreaker as most likely it'll come with the "unknown Sources" check box to install non market apps. I'm sure root will be around the corner and warranty doesnt matter all that much to me. I havent had to send one back to htc yet. Usually deal with at&t warranty dept. or insurance.
Non-market apps and root are Apples and Oranges. I think I have needed non-market only once (beta app) in all my years of Android but I run quite a few apps that require root. Titanium Backup, Clockwork Mod (allows custom roms), root explorer, set cpu and a couple others.

Skyrocket (hate that name) is a GSII with 4.5" and LTE so there will be no notification light. I agree 100% on warranty. it's a non-issue for me as well. My concern is only how long it will take to get the bootloader unlocked. Who knows, it may be available immediately.

So we got to wait until htc releases the unlock tool for the htc vivid before we can unlock the bootloader to root it?

If so, maybe I should check out the samsung skyrocket. I returned the samsung galaxy s2, I thnk I just couldnt get by without an led notification. I wonder if the skyrocket will have them. I'm also thinking the htc vivid will have a better screen and possibly better camera.

Maybe unlock will come with release? I'm sure it won't be that far behind. Unlike the sensation which took months this shouldn't be too long since they now have their websystem working.

No but I remember with at&t devices they would not include the "unknown sources" option so the only way to get that was by rooting I believe.

Somebody already temp rooted using one click method in this forum. But yea I have a few apps that need root myself. I think I'm definitely sticking with HTC.

Well, with all the good things I have seen about the Vivid, particularly the screen, I think I have decided on the Samsung. The "deal killer" for me (don't laugh) is that the microusb jack is on the side rather than the bottom. It really makes no sense (no pun intended) for that design.

First, when sitting in a car cradle the USB cable protrudes from the side which causes a couple problems for me. First is the constant downward pressure on the jack from the weight of the cable and gravity which could damage the jack or worse cause a short if it is partially dislodged, second it will more easily fall out, third it will preclude any true "drop-in" desktop sync cradles and fourth, the jack is so low my Pro-Clip car cradle will cover it so I wouldn't even be able to plug in the charger.

Another PLUS (for me) is that the Skyrocket will fit in the 2 OEM Samsung desktop cradles I already have from my INFUSE. I already tested the T-Mo version of the Skyrocket in it and it fit fine. That'll save me $49 X2.

There are desktop cradles but they are usually the generic type which have silly looking 4" long wires protruding you have to connect. This is almost as dumb of a design as the original HTC EVO which (if I remember the 4 days I had it) had the charging jack on TOP. Dumb dumb dumb.

So, I guess it is the GSII Skyrocket for me by default. De fault of the dumb design. :)

The USB socket is located on the side of both my BlackBerry and my old Windows phone. Never a problem.
It would depend on how much you used it "plugged in" while driving, where & how it was located in the vehicle, what type of car cradle you used and if you used a drop-in desk charger if it would be a problem FOR YOU.

If you put it down flat on a desk and plugged in the charger it would be no problem but if you drove around 6 hours a day using the GPS so needed it charging all the time and had the same ProClip powered car mount I used or wanted to use a desktop drop-in sync cradle with audio & video output through the USB port you might.

That is why I wrote "deal killer for me" not for "deal killer everyone." :);)
