I don't believe it's possible to do this. Sounds as if you have come from a feature phone like myself where you have the standard inbox / outbox / sent / draft etc. The threaded messaging takes a bit of getting used to - but if you really want to stick with the inbox / outbox approach there are replacement SMS apps on the Android Market that will allow you to do this.
