Root Huawei Ascend = Metro Pcs Owner

Try superone Click. A friend had problems rooting after flashing back to stock and super one click worked perfectly.

ShinySide, u r AWESOME! I am rooted!

For others... get SuperOneClick from shortfuse.org and unzip it on a Windows (Vista or later---XP didn't work for me) box. Watch the video: "How to Root an Android Phone with SuperOneClick". I didn't need to install phone drivers---SOC did it for me ("forcefully").

Before I could get Titanium Backup to work, I had to go to "Preferences" and set "Use System Busybox" (even though I had Busybox installed). Then Settings->More->Reload Application. You should see a Superuser dialog when TB reloads asking you to grant root rights.

More important: TB cannot remove the MetroPCS bloatware ("could not locate apk file" or some such)! Install Root Explorer ($4) and delete everything in /cust/metropcs/us/app.

I have the Huawei Ascend with the 2.1 version (haven't updated yet to 2.2) rooted with z4root and I'm using WifiTether for converting it into a hot spot. So far so good.

The problem has been removing the stock Metro apps... I don't want Boingo, Free Games, UNO or any of that crap so I tried downloading Terminal Emulator and removing them one by one using the Linux shell. However, apparently z4root doesn't give you access to the system folder, so the user is still not authorized to remove stock apps from the phone even though it's properly rooted. Has anybody found a program that can bypass this? Maybe a "deeper" root?

Download ROM ToolBox it has a root browser and some other cool things in it. Just select "root browser" and go to the system>app folder and long press an apk and select delete.

Also, wifi tethering is not allowed to be discussed on Android Forums due to MetroPCS' Terms of Service not allowing tethering. :)

For a rooted 2.1 Ascend, you can remove them with Titanium Backup (free version is fine). When you're in TB, touch the "backup/restore" button at top, select the app you want to remove, then "un-install". But, be careful! Uninstalling an important system app can make your phone downright useless. The ones you've mentioned (Boingo, Free Games, Uno) are okay to uninstall. Here are some threads with lists of what else is okay and not okay to uninstall:

Hi, when I try to uninstall I get a message saying

When I try to uninstall using RomToolbox
It deletes off of list then after about 25/30 seconds it reappears...
Wtf...

Did you upgrade your Ascend to 2.2? If so, you may find that MetroPCS moved the location of many apps to /cust/metropcs/us/app. TB doesn't seem to know about this. That may also be the reason RomToolbox is failing. In order to remove bloatware from my 2.2 Ascend, I bought RootExplorer (from Market) and deleted everything in the /cust/metropcs/us/app directory.
