Root Hydra/Radio help?

Couldn't really find this posted anywhere: I have 2.1 stock and I don't really want to clear everything for 2.2 (can I upgrade like an OTA to 2.2?) so I want to install a hydra kernal for better battery life.

The 2.15 radio update wouldnt stick on my phone for some reason, and 0.5 or 1.0 hydra kernals won't work with 1.0 radio. Is there a hydra version that will?

EDIT: need to install from HBOOT not clockwork, and I think hydra only works for froyo roms
 
That is correct. The new hydra kernels require you to be running froyo. As for going from 2.1 to 2.2, just do a nandroid, and do full titanium backups of apps & data. Do a full wipe & the 2.2 install, then install the kernel. Then restore your apps & data from titanium. DO NOT attempt to restore any of the system apps, or you'll overwrite the 2.2 stuff. It's a bit of a pain getting setup again, but it's worth it to know that you have a clean system that you are starting from, instead of having underlying issues.
