Root I am still scared!!!

Scared of what its pretty straightforward plenty of videos and tutorials. It took ne a while but I finally have it working. For me it didn't work on windows but worked first try on ubuntu.
 
Took me several tries over the period of a week but I finally got it. Its not hard and there are a ton of resources to follow when doing it

Follow the steps on the site, I was scared at first to do it to but its worth it.

When it comes time to use a wire, use a paperclip instead, it's so much easier. I tried for a half hour with a wire and I was nervous and sweating. It worked the first try with a paperclip. Bend the paperclip and wrap it in electrical tape (I just used duct-tape) but leave the ends uncovered. It makes the hole process feel less tedious.

Just follow the instructions and you won't **** up.
 
If you are afraid that much, maybe you should back off and read some more about it until you feel confident to do it. Chances are that if you are that scared that you will mess up, you will.
But from someone that has been there before, you'll be fine. Just follow the instructions and be sure to do a backup before you try anything that involves going into the phones' systems. And if you mess up, know that its really hard to totally & permanently brick your phone nowadays. Whatever you do can most likely be undone with time & patient.

Paperclip wouldnt work for me, i ended up using a piece of wire from an old phone charger Lol
 
The first time I did soff, it took me a 2-3 hours to get the correct timing.

The second time, it took me 45 minutes to get the correct timing.

The third time, I used a metronome app, set to 48 beats per minute. I briefly touched the wire to the ground at the start of 2 "beats" of the metronome...Timing was perfect! It worked the first time!!! :D

Your mileage may vary..This may help...
 
I don't have windows 7, and they caution windows xp users.
Are there reports of catastrophic xp attempts? How about successful xp attempts?

I've decided to go the Live CD route.
 
I just recently did it as well,and everyone is right it's much more sketchy sounding than it really is,took me about 20 mins to get it (about 5-7 attempts).
This is a great community here and members have done a good job with helpful and detailed threads.I am glad I went ahead and did it myself ;)
If I had a better wire I'm sure it would have been even easier.

OP; it's all about confidence. I was able to make it work with a masking-taped paper-clip after a few attempts, even did it through a virtual machine (since these tools don't seem to like Windows 8 yet).
 
Make sure u got everything u need. My problem wasn't s-offing but after I s-offed I had a problem and I took two days for me two fix I couldn't get online and ask 4 help because my phone is how I get on internet. So make sure you got everything u need and you have read the instructions and you'll be fine.

The metronome is a great idea. With 48 bpm, that puts you just at 1.25 seconds, and if you're a tad late, you should be under 1.5 seconds.

XP worked perfectly for me, I've had no problems rooting and doing down and dirty things to this phone, moto triumph, HTC inspire, droid x, kindle fire HD, gs2 and gs3. Oh and jailbroke many Iphones and pods lol on a at least 10 year old laptop too

Just make sure you have everything ready before you start. And don't let the notes at the j-bear site intimidate you;) They sound sorta snarky (they may not *be* snarky, but they sound that way) and it is off-putting.

Best thing probably is to read the threads on s-off--including all the replies--so you know what to expect.
 
I was a little bit worried about doing it as well. I've never done anything really hardware related like this on my phones before either. Did it on my second try, SD card still works fine. They make it sound much harder than it really is.

EDIT: I did it on Windows 7.

I wasn't expecting to have the option to keep trying the wire trick until it worked. What I mean is I tried it at least 10 times before I got it. But they were consecutive times. I was expecting to have to restart ControlBear each time I failed the timing, but no, it just kept on asking me to do the wire trick over and over, so I kept doing it.

Is there a situation where it proceeds with the unlock and gets to those beer references but fails and you have to run ControlBear all over again? If so, I never experienced that.

Much less painful than anticipated. I suppose that's better than being more painful than anticipated :p

I think my SD card is fried. I put it in my OG EVO and I can't mount it in recovery. I turned on USB-MS from the recovery there and I can't see it in Windows. I paritioned it again, and I still can't see it. Aside from using a card reader and plugging it into my PC, is there anything else I can do to verify that it's dead before I toss it? I'll probably get another one at the store tomorrow, and it will come with a full sized SD adapter. I can play around with it more then.

Luckily, I was prepared to lose the SD card, but I was hopeful that it wouldn't happen. I think I saw some 8 gig Sandisk cards at Walmart for $10. I could save online, but I don't if I'd even bother.
 
It's actually pretty easy, people tend to get scared because they think that you're actually shorting your phone but in actuality all you're really doing is taking a pull down resistor low by grounding it to the sd card frame. Definitely try to use a spare 2 gig card if you can because if you get the timing wrong it can bork the card. I did my phone on the 2nd try with a wire and Win7, did my buddies first try with a twist tie and XP. Good luck dude, it's definitely worth the time and effort. :D

Just FYI I got a 32GB from newegg with adapter 20 bucks delivered. Transcend. Took a week for free shipping to happen with the holidays.
 
I am off on Monday & Tuesday, I'm gonna watch some videos and download everything I need. So when I'm off, I will try s-off.
