Just got the message from VM that I have exceeded my data cap. Throttled from 1.5 MB to 121kb. Still have a week and a half left before my new month kicks in.

If you get message, post your pre and post throttling speeds here. Let's keep track, and share any ideas or tools to help overcome this throttling short of switching to Sprint.

Thanks,
Guian

Update: 4/4/12 - Upon rebooting my phone this morning, my speeds are running between 200kbps to 400 kbps download, and 256kbps upload, with 125ms ping.

Same situation. Got mine last night. My new month starts on the 22nd.

Was getting 768kbps pre-throttle, now from 56kbps to 78kbps. This is indoors at work.

I usually listen to Tune-In Radio about nine hours a day at work, since for some reason we can not get good radio reception, even though we have a station three miles down the road. Now I'm buffering like mad. It was buffering bad before since that seems to be a bug with the new version of Tune In.

Anyone know of any radio apps for the OV that use a good data stream compression? Can't go without my tunes for my work makes me bored. LOL
;(

By music CD's (pawn shops are everywhere. you can sometimes pick up amazing music cd's for a buck a piece). Rip them into mp3 format. Put them on your SD Card. Plug in earphones. No data usage. Win.

I use I Heart Radio and it seems to be easy on data. My speeds are crappy and that's not being throttled. I tried Pandora before and got alot of buffering.

1)turn off data when not in use to prevent apps from trying to connect to the internet
2)use wifi as often as possible
3)don't tether because you can easily blow through data

That's about all you can do.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll try out I Heart and rip some music. Can you rip movies to an SD card as well?

Yeah I had that same problem, and switched to Slacker. The old Tune In app before they updated to current version had good quality and low data streams that only buffered when you had a very weak signal.

Now the new and improved version tends to buffer like mad during the afternoon.

Grace do you Have Tune-In Pro? That allows you to record the music and stations for offline listening. you could connect to Wi-fi, and then record a few hours of music from Tune-In. Or go with NoNames suggestion on ripping the CDs.

Seek out lower bitrate AAC or AAC+ streams on TuneIn. They offer the option for many stations. Streaming mp3 at 128k or higher will eat data like crazy! A lower bitrate AAC+ stream sounds just as good or sometimes better.

IHeartRadio streams AAC+ at about 56k for all their streams, AFAIK. All the stations have great sound quality and fewer buffering issues. Same with Pandora, Slacker, 8Tracks and others. CBS's Radio.com offers high and low bitrate streaming.

Yes BUT you need to have them ripped and converted to correct format.
I have ASUS TF and use DVDCatalyst to rip for both TF & OV.
It is not free but is well supported by the Dev, He has a crippled version that you can down load to see if you like the UI.
He has format for virually any device you have now and a s new devices are released he updates the app.
It runs on PC only.

You bet. I take favorite videos on my computer (including full length movies) and reencode them at 480x320 pixels and save them on my SD card.

Mobo Player is a fantastic video player for the Optimus V. It downloads a set of codecs which permit it to play video formats which the stock Optimus can't play.

I echo the comment about ripping your own audio CDs and saving them to your SD card as MP3 files - it's nice having an MP3 player with over 24 hours of music without using any 3G.

Grooveshark is another alternative.

It's got an option to use lower bitrate files that MIGHT work for throttled streaming

Hi there. Will these 2 options put less drain on my battery, as well?

Have a great Easter Weekend, gang. Thanks for all of the wonderful help. It's been greatly appreciated. :)

Turning off mobile data will drastically increase battery life.

Turning on wifi will eat up battery.

Turning off Mobile data,WiFi,Bluetooth,GPS, Auto Sync (I use a Sync app that will turn it on for short periods of time, then back off), and turn the screen brightness down but still be able to see the screen without straining. This will save the battery.
I only turn things on when I need them. I have no battery saving app (they have a tendency to limit how many functions you can use at one time). I can have 100% battery when I go to bed, when I wake up 8 hours latter I still have 100% battery. If I leave WiFi on I have somewhere in the low 90% when I wake up. Keeping WiFi on will allow apps to use it and drain the battery.

I have had the V since April of last year. Leaving WiFi on will drain the battery at the very least 1% an hour.

I got the text message on April 4th. "You've used 2.5GB..."

Before throttling I was typically getting around 700-900 kbps down (sometimes faster, sometimes slower). Now I'm getting around 200-300 kbps down.

My plan restarts on the 23rd of each month.

I tried today to restart my plan month on the Virgin Mobile website, but I'm getting a "Whoops" error message when they try to process my request that tells me I need to call Virgin Mobile.

Now I'm just wondering if that error could possibly be due to the fact that my phone is rooted and running a custom ROM. I don't want to brick my phone!

Anyone else try to restart their plan month and see that error message?

VM only has you down as a paid account. It doesn;t know if you are using a rooted phone or not. More than likely, the website is mucked up again.

Its hit and miss on getting through. There are some issues with its site certificates, and tracking cookies. Which browser are you using? If its I.E., try Firefox, or Chrome and see if the site will allow you to restart. If not, call VM and have them restart your month.

The throttling speed that I'm getting now isn't causing me a lot of issues
with streaming stuff from Hulu and You Tube (just a little buffering, then no prob). Netflix (well the latest build is still the same - audio sync problem).

Unless you really gotta have the speed back, see if you can use the OV as usual. If so, then you just saved yourself some money.

I was tempted to restart month, but wanted to see how much the throttling caused an issue with what I do. with the exception of the above, it really hasn't been that much of an issue.

I need the speed for LogMeIn. ;)

I'm still getting the error message. I've already tried all browsers and clearing all data/cache/cookies etc. Very frustrating. I don't want to call them. They will probably mess something up.

So I finally restarted my plan month just now. Ran the speed test and it was still being throttled. Ran it a couple more times and and it has improved to about 500kbps - 700kbps down on average, so apparently not being throttled anymore.
