Help I Cannot Get The USB File Transfer System To Work

TopCow

Lurker
So...this is my first Samsung phone. I did a search here and I couldn't find anyone with my specific problem.

I just came from a Droid Razr and before that, HTC Thunderbolt. Both of those were easy: Plug, drag & drop. When I plug the USB cable in, my laptop (Sony Vaio, just in case that's important) DOES NOT recognize the phone's storages. I downloaded the official Samsung drivers pack from their site, and now only SOMETIMES does it read the storages, but when I try to transfer some files (or ever A file), I get a pop-up saying it cannot be transferred because the storage device does not recognize the file and has been disconnected (which it's clearly not).

Am I doing something wrong? Or am I just a dim-noob who doesn't know about about a specific way Samsung does files transfers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Unfortunately it's a known issue and there is no setting to change it, there are several posts that discuss this.

Thank you. I knew I was a bit on the slow side. I just plugged my micro-sd card with an adapter into my laptop and transferred files that way, which is not hard at all, but still, it'd be easier to just plug the phone in. Oh, well. Even this setback, the phone is still MILES better than the RAZR.

ive been using windows media player flawlessly, if that helps ya at all...just drag them straight from your desktop, drop and hit sync

So, I read somewhere that the SG3 "prefers" USB 3.0. I have 4 total usb ports and only one of them is 3.0...I tried it today, and bamf! My phone shows up just fine on my laptop. Just thought I'd update.

USB 3.0 port did not work for me. Here is a solution that did (Android 2.3.6).

Connect the phone and PC .
Verify in Settings>USB settings that Mass Storage is selected.
Restart the phone.
Notification screen will show "USB Connected". Touch Connect, or
Notification screen will show "USB Storage in Use". No action required.
PC will show a Removable Drive. Drag/drop or copy/paste files to it.
When done, Notification screen-touch "Disconnect storage from PC

There's no USB storage mode on the s3

use the app SGS3 Easy UMS from XDA forums to achieve USB Mass Storage mode on the S3. Sadly, this requires the device to be rooted first. :(
If you are happy with the program, you can always afterward contribute to its development by using the Donate app on the PlayStore. Please do note that the Donation app is only for donations and does not contain the actual app.

It also requires you to be a windows user. Big fail for me. Ftp all the way
no it doesn't.
I'm using it on linux. Haven't booted into windows in God knows how long...
I'm dual-booting Gnome shell/Win7, but it's been ages since I've done anything constructive in Windows. At times, I even forget that it's still on my laptop! LOL
