Root I cant get to the root screen ;/

I followed the directions on geekfor.me, and have rooted my Hero before....but I am having an issue:

When I start my phone holding the volume up/power button the 'recovery' option takes me to a phone with an exclamation point.

I have to go into a command prompt on my pc and run that 'recovery-windows.bat' file every time to get to the recovery console on the phone.

What am I doing wrong?

That is the only way you can write to system folder for now.
Meaning holding down to the vol/ powering on - just takes you to the Android Stock recovery, not a rooted one, yet. You aren't doing anything wrong
