Help I can't hear you

When I'm making phone calls on my Atrix people can't hear me properly. They say it sounds like I'm speaking from under the bed clothes!

If I put the phone on Speaker, they can hear me fine, but as soon as I switch it back again it's just the same.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Speaker phone uses a different Mic (It uses the one on the back that the camera uses).

The main mic is a tiny little "Slit" in the glass at the bottom of the front of the phone. Right in the center. Where the glass meets the metal frame.

I've seen this when that gets covered. It muffles the sound.
Have you put a case or screen protector on the phone? Make sure they are not covering this.

Also look to make sure there is nothing in that little slit of a hole. A chunk of lint it all it takes to stop it up.

It could simply be how you are holding the phone. (This is very unlikely, but still possible.)

Worst case, you have a bad main mic on the phone. That would be a warranty repair issue.

Well, thanks Robby... it seems you were correct! I took a tiny piece of plastic and gently probed the mic slit, and even though I didn't see anything get dislodged, it seems to have solved the issue!

Nice one :)

I think there might be a bit of fabric down in there that acts to keep dust out of the mic itself. Not only that, it acts as a "Wind Screen" like the big puff balls you see on microphones. I've never taken the Atrix apart, but I've taken other phones apart (Several BlackBerry phones) and they had that.

I wonder if there is one and, somehow, it got a little wadded up? That would make it dense enough to muffle the sound. If so, when you probed around, it could have shifted it back.

Just a theory. - Regardless, glad to know you've got it working!
