Help I can't install larger-sized apps! @3@

Hey guys, I hope you can help with this problem I'm experiencing. I fear I may be close to heaving my Desire out of the window - abruptly followed by myself.

I'm using an HTC Desire. It runs android version 2.2 (vanilla) and it was supplied by the UK network Orange. I don't use a task killer.

Here's my problem: I don't seem to be able to install any apps over the size of 20MB. At first I was convinced that the issue may have been that I didn't have enough free space on my handset's internal memory. I tried uninstalling a few apps but it didn't do the trick sadly. The notification bar continues to display the same message as before: 'Download was unsuccessful please try again.'

Still convinced that the issue would in fact be due to low internal memory space, I continued uninstalling apps. I've now managed to free up over 65MB and still no joy.

Here are the apps I've tried so far:

Mega Jump-30.71MB
Pocket Legends-25.08MB
Crazy Snowboard-20.89MB

With each one that bloody message makes another maddening appearance. I've restarted my phone multiple times, tried a different home network, and even cleared the data from the marketplace app.

Quite frankly I'm out of ideas.

Any help you guys can give is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

are you s-off? alpharev / custom partition layout? You cant download apps bigger than the free amount of cache in the /cache partition.

Download quick system info and give me your cache stats.

I downloaded it. Here are the cache stats:

Total: 40MB
Free: 17:70MB

I also thought I better add:

That's gobble-de-gook to me I'm afraid. Can you dumb that question down for me please?

EDIT) I fixed it. Hallelujah! I'll provide a full explanation tomorrow as it's too late now.

Long story short here's what I did to fix the problem should any of you ever encounter it in the future:

• I deleted all my text messages
• I used a cache cleaner app
• Bingo, chango-preto; Everything was back to normal

Basically, the internal NAND (flash memory) of the phone is broken into 3 main parts.

/system (where Android is) 250MB
/data (where your settings and apps are stored) 148MB
/cache (where apps are downloaded to before install) 40MB

If cahce is full, you cannot download apps. If only x amount is free, cannot download apps bigger than x.

S-off is something for root users, where you can change the bootloaded to redefine the size of the partitions above. Many reduce the /cache size in favour of bigger data, which is why I asked my question
