Help I don't want to see all Gmail contacts! Android 2.2

I don't want to see all my GMail Contacts on my Desire running android 2.2

On Android 2.1 i could just select to view 'my contacts' from Gmail

With 2.2 i now see every gmail contact that i have a phone number for. When i first set up my gmail account years ago i upploaded a massive list of contacts.

On my phone how do i just see the details for people i regulary want to contact

I could just delete all the old contacts out of gmail, but there must be a easier way surely?????

People > Menu > View > Untick google

Create a group called regular contacts - set people to just show that group

Thanks for the tip. I have created a regular contacts group in gmail contacts, but it doesn't give me the option to only view regular contacts on my phone, so hasn't solved the problem
