Root I finally decided to root!

I have done a lot of reading in this forum and never participated, but today I will put my little grain into helping those who haven't decided yet to take this chance and go the rooting heavens way.
Yes, definitely rooting is the way to go. If you do so, your desire will be the excelent phone you thought it was, without limitations.
I have had this phone for 5 months already and loved this little toy. But, coming from an iPhone 16gb never had issues with storage problems. Problem that was driving me crazy with my desire. Everything else I loved about my new phone.
Yesterday I finally decided to take the plunge and man was it my best decision. I'm free, finally. YES!!!
After a lot of reading and research I decided to go with the leedroid Rom. Stable, energy efficient (compared to the original HTC ) and the most annoying feature is gone, NO MORE STORAGE LIMITATIONS, yesssssss! Free at last! Hehehe.
Since I usually keep new phones like this for a period of 2 or 3 years I wanted to make sure I could really get the best of this phone and now I don't regret buying the desire. Read everywhere this was one of the best phone out there. Now I'm sure I will enjoy it all the way to the end. ;)
 
Well done! Rooting was the best decision I made as it opened up the world of possibilities! Ive rooted, S-OFFed, installed MIUI rom, installed custom recovery, changed bootanimation, changed splash screen and changed font! Its been a fabulous little project so far! Enjoy mate ;)

Take it easy on me mate. Thas too much info for me to swallow. Hehe. S-off, bootanimation, splash screen, etc it gives me the chils. ;)
The primary reason I rooted was storage limitations, firstly. Now, I'm not new to tinkering phones since I come from an iPhone wich I jailbroke and messed around with to no end ( I still have it). What I love about Android is that customization comes loaded in and it is almost unlimited compared to iOs.
I love this phone, I love Android and love these the freedom it gives.
Don't worry, I'm sure I will thinker much more with this little nice toy to take it to its limits. ;)
 
Welcome, I did exactly the same thing as you yesterday - for exactly the same reasons!
:D

My phone is now perfect in every way as well.
I will probably stick with Leedroid because I liked the stock Sense UI it was just the storage that was driving me crazy.

Hi,

I think I will be going this way too as the space issue is getting ridiculous now, but wondered if you could provide answers on the following:


  • What method you used for rooting, ie. did you use Unrevoked?

  • What was your HBOOT version? Mine's 0.93.0001, would it work?

  • Once you had rooted did you only have to flash the ROM, or did you have to some fiddling with SD partitions to fool the device into using the SD for caches etc?

If space is your issue, you are going to need to partition your SD card to make best use of what rooting gives you.

I will have a read. I have read most of the rooting stuff a few times over, but the SD partitioning is still a bit of a mystery to me.

With regard to the other questions, will Unrevoked suffice?

The OP seemed to imply (or maybe I misread) that just installing Leedroid solved his space worries. Will a custom ROM automatically repartition the internal memory to give more space for apps? Or does it just come with APPS2SD+ (in which case you'd need an EXT partition)?

You need to partition the SDcard to use apps2sd+
Then flash Leedroid that includes apps2sd+ support.

Hi mate.

I used unrevoked, pretty easy. My Hboot was same as yours.

Follow this guide. It was very easy.

We have our own guides here that are kept up to date. if people here follow these guides, we have better chances of supporting them if they go wrong. ;)

I think I can safely speak for all of us who have rooted our main reason for rooting was to free up our internal memory the rest of it was a bonus! Ive enjoyed the project so far and I am sure you will do the same. You are in the right place if you need any help so dont be afraid to tinker cos trust me android customisation has no boundaries!!

Dan i recommended your rooting guide to a friend last night and they found it very easy to root so anybody looking to root check it out!
 
Thanks. Not really "my" guide. A lot of the credit goes to the author of an existing guide.

All I have done is update it, add a bit etc.

But that is very good feedback, thanks for letting me know ;)
 
Hi guys - I feel like rooting tonight ;o)

Everything set up but I have one final question - what should the partition be set to on the SD card? I have a 16GB card, so not tight for space, but is there an optimum EXT partition size?

...So I finally did it!

I partitioned my SD card, rooted and flashed Leedroid 2.3d (with Apps2SD) without any significant problems. All appeared to be fine until...

...I try to log into my Google account :(. Even though I know I am entering the right credentials it refuses to let me log in. I am wondering if this has something to do with 2 factor authentication which I enabled a few weeks back?

By way of remedial action so far, I have performed a hard reset having read similar stories, but still no luck.

Any ideas please guys as phone is nigh on useless unless I can log in?

Okay sorted (phew - breathes sigh of relief!)

By way of my contribution to this process, please be aware that if you have enabled 2 factor authentication it stuffs up your access when logging into your phone for the first time.

The fix is to log into your Google account on your PC and remove 2 factor authentication (you can re-enable later).

Once I had done this everything was hunkdory, but imagine this is going to crop up again with it being a recent Google enhancement.
