It's not a requirement just a suggest in case anything goes wrong. If you want to go back to froyo you'll need to flash a new rom but there is no way to recover to become you flash but that's ok.

Just a suggestion. Get the current ROM set up just how you want it. With all your apps just where you want them. Then go into the recovery and make a backup.
If you go to the "backup and restore" section and select the "backup" option it will make a nandroid backup of your current ROM.

If you do it right, you can put a Froyo ROM on the sd card before you go into the recovery. Then after you make a backup of the current ROM, you can install the Froyo ROM and set up WiFi and your Google account. Then go back into the recovery and make a nandroid of that ROM.
The reason for this is so you will have a nandroid of a ROM with the activate app, in case you lose your data connection (CM-7 and CM-9 ROM's don't have it).

Then wipe and format everything you did to install a fresh ROM. Go to the restore option and restore the Gingerbread ROM.

Now your set.
