Root I give up - root time!

I've been resisting for ages, but it's finally time for some rooty goodness. :)
No particular shortage of space (~50mb free) & I like how it all looks (LP+) - it's mainly so I can get some of the extra battery life that some ROMs claim, & little things like better camera apps...

The only thing that's been holding me back is the warranty issue but the phone's a year old now & I can always de-root.

Some quick questions though if you don't mind;
1: does the actual act of rooting change anything on your SD card? I'm waiting for a 16gb one to arrive before I start playing with roms & partitions etc, but wondering whether I can root now as a first step.

2: is there any reason to make a gold card on an unbranded (2.29.405.5) phone?

3: has anyone come across any issues with insurance claims on a rooted phone? If it's physically damaged would one need to make sure it's so thoroughly destroyed that nobody could tell?!?

I'm on HBOOT 0.93.0001, PVT1 so it should be nice and simple... wish me luck! Cheers :D
 
Hey mate im sure you will have fun and good luck waiting for your sd card before you start flashing roms lol. Rooting is like opening the door to narnia you have to go in lol.

1. It wont touch your sd card apart from adding some more files. Go ahead and root :) you can always transfer everything to your new sd card also if uou do want to flash a rom

2. I never bothered making one on my desire. You will be fine without it if its unbranded.

3. Insurance wont matter with root only warranty claims.

4. Make sure you read the guides ;)
 
rooting itself doesn't change anything on the card.

Goldcard is less important with an unbranded phone, because there's no problem with getting hold of the corresponding RUU. It does give you more options, in that you could flash a branded RUU if necessary, but I do struggle to think why you would want to.
 
Excellent - that's pretty much what I figured but it's reassuring to have it confirmed!
So basically the only reason not to do it is the chance that it could die of an unrelated internal cause (such that it couldn't be un-rooted) & the warranty may not be considered valid...

The 16gb card should be here tomorrow. :)
 
But I think you still need to note down the software number at least before you flash rom. I didn't :-)

Another query which I've not come across a clear answer too - what's the best way of getting my apps back once the new ROM's installed? I've done a titanium backup, but I'm going to partition the new SD card for A2SD+ so I don't want the apps back 'as is'... & I've not currently got room to move them all back from the SD card (on stock 2.2) before the backup.

What'll happen if I restore using titanium to a different setup - ie A2SD+ rather than stock froyo? Kinda hoping it'll 'just work' but would like to be sure I don't need to do anything more!

It will just work. a2sd+ script takes /data/app/ and symbolically links to /sd-ext/data/app/ so all apps that are installed in /data/app/ are symlinked to /sd-ext/data/app automatically.

So when you titanium restore, it is installing apps in /data/app/ so its all automatic.
