I Hate Phone List

Wow...honestly people are complaining about this??? Push the call button, your call history comes up. Touch the People app, it gives you an alphabetical list of all your contacts.

'Nuff said.

(much more was and will be said, of course ;))

It really seems like people complain to just complain. Good heavens, let's just complain that the phone can't read my mind and do exactly what I'm wanting it to do in my mind within one nanosecond of me thinking about it.

Wow, there is WAY TOO MUCH complaining and arguing going on in this thread.

It's quite simple, actually. Yes, the "call" button usually brings up the Recent Calls on *most* phones (at least it has on all of my previous phones). There is usually a separate shortcut key I'd set to bring up my "contacts" list.

HOWEVER... the problem that the OP stated, is a complaint I have had since day 1 with this phone: Sure, the call button brings up your recent call list, THAT'S FINE, no problem... BUT, anyone in that list, it REMOVES from your alphabetically-ordered contacts list below. THAT is incredibly annoying.

Yeah, yeah, "use the People shortcut"... that's fine, except it doesn't have the quick search function that the Phone app has.

Beyond that, what is there to argue about? Really guys, lighten up! ;)

Although I used to prefer seeing my contacts in alphabetical order, I've been forced to get used to dial-searching for who I want to call. It actually IS much faster, so I'm fine with out. But it does still bug me that the rest of them aren't in order :p

Slightly off-topic now... a minor gripe I have about the stock SMS app is sending a message to multiple people at once. You have to type in the extra names you want and it searches that way. I prefer my old phone where it brought up your contact list, and allowed you to "check" which ones you wanted to add to the message. This was always better for me in case I might've missed someone, then saw their name in the list and decided yeah I want to send it to them too.

I actually think that was News Radio's complaint.

There's another cool option in the Eris: long-press a blank spot on whichever screen, hit folder, then live folder, then phones.

Use that shortcut.

The key problem with the Phone button is that it does display the contact list. If it is a call history then this list should be blank on first use. As you contact different people, this list should expand.

In saying this, I agree with most posts that you can either use the dial pad or setup a link to the People directory.

The functionality would have been better if it still sorted the calls based on call history at the top and did not remove any entry from the contact list below. That way you can just press the Phone button to see your call history and access your contacts at the same time.

I would love to try this option...does it drain your battery?

I have the People Widget on my phone (one that takes up an entire screen). The widget has all the people that I labeled as my "Favorites", the ones I call the most so all I have to do is touch their picture and it calls them. If I need to call a different contact, I simply touch the icon at the bottom of the widget with three lines. Voila! My entire contact list in alphabetical order that lets me type in a person's name and brings them up instead of scrolling through tons of contacts! It's so darn easy that I find it utterly hilarious that anyone could complain about it.

they are just griping about the way the phone app is constructed, and I agree. i made a big long post about it here...

I made the same comment about the STORM phone app and how much nicer it is.

I set out to make an app that would mimic the STORM. 3 tabs accross the top, etc.

I had it all done. Then I found out that there is no way to make another phone app the default. ANDROID simply will not let you do that.

So what was happening is that both the ANDROID phone app and my phone app were popping up with incoming calls.

Perhaps my biggest gripe is that the stupid dial pad comes up when selecting PHONE. I rarely have to punch in a number since I have the favorites set up.

I am using Dialer One (available in the Market) and I love it. It is very customizable, so you can probably make it do anything you'd like. Also, when I press the physical phone button on my phone, it brings up a menu asking me which app to use (Dialer One or Phone) for this operation... I clicked Dialer One, and check "use as default" so now I have Dialer One as my default phone app.

I am rooted, running without Sense, so I'm not sure if either of those make a difference or not, but it's worth a shot for you to try. If it doesn't work, maybe you can disable Sense and use the standard Android Home (or use ADWLauncher or LauncherPro)... none of that requires root. Try it out!
