Root I have a Droid Pro...and I'm clueless...

I just got a Droid Pro about two weeks ago. I have gotten comfortable maneuvering around with it, but now I want to know more about it's capabilities. I've heard about "rooting" the phone and would like to know more if anyone has any advice. I definitely wouldn't mind being able to access media for free...and any other benefits. Like I said, I pretty much know nothing, so any advice would be great :)
 
Rooting a device on its own will not give you media or anything else for free. Rooting in simplistic terms means to obtain root or superuser access. This allows you the opportunity to remove/alter the files that the manufacturer and/or provider want you to leave alone. The most common use of rooting is to remove the provider installed "crapware" that may take up valuable space and use precious battery life. The other thing people .look for with rooting (though not technically correct) is to install roms/kernels/radios/ect. made by the developer community. This can greatly change your phones performance in the positive or sometimes the negative. XDA is a great place to get up to speed on rooting and roms. Enjoy your new toy!
 
You won't LEGALLY access any media (that is normally paid) for free by simply rooting your phone. The biggest advantage of rooting (IMO) is the custom ROMs and tweaks that developers/enthusiasts produce for the phone.

Theres a ton of mp3 downloaders out there free on the market. If you wanna save youtube videos; google "freedi youtube downloader" and get the app from the developers site. If you want movies for free pick up an android torrent downloading app...there are a lot of mp4 torrents for downloads in mp4 or m4v format that will play back on your phone.
 
I think this thread would get more help in the Root Section. I'm going to move it for organizational purposes. If you disagree, please feel free to PM a mod to move it back.
